Fuel Pump Humming...

Hi, Just a quick question to anyone who may know or had experience of this problem. My 87 Carrera Targa makes a humming noise when driving which is coming from the the footwell/centreconsole area of my car. I've heard it could be the fuel pump on its way out, if so how soon do I need to change the fuel pump, if this is the problem ! Thanks in advance TC...

Bosch fuel pumps for k-jetronic cars often exhibit this buzzing or humming sound, and you should be able to hear it from outside the car too. They can go on for years without failing.

If it is annoying you should get the car up in the air and confirm that the noise is coming from the fuel pump. If so, you could try a fuel system cleaner like Forte. It might improve things, otherwise a new pump might be the only respite for your ears.

I believe that my fuel pump has hummed on and off for the last 9 years - mostly in hot weather - but it still keeps on pumping (and playing the same tune).

I just assumed that it was a feature.

(As in, 'if you can't fix it, feature it')
