as a newbie to these great cars im doing a resto on a y plate 82 2.0 everything is going well up till i decided to change the noisey fuel pump ,i took the fuel lines off top and bottom and connected them on the top one i used the original pump nozzle and union and fresh seal then to the wiring i had to cut the wires which on the old pump was 2 black and green wires on the smallest terminal and 2 brown on the largest and placed them on and secured them the same way and discovered the brown wire from the in tank pump was broken off but the car still ran? so i reconnected this it was the upper terminal,so then i went to try and start it and all it would do was turn over and not fire with an occasional cough, can anyone help with the wiring side-have i wired correctly or suggest where i went wrong
thanks graeme

is the fuse on the main panel?,took off new pump today and tried putting power straight to it from the battery and it sounded jammed?fuel is definatly getting to the pump from the in tank pump but not beyond by any great amount also the pump body seemed hot and there seems to be power at the fuel relay

I hope you didn't test this pump dry, as it relies on the fuel, which is in an oxygen free environment inside the pump and therefore not at risk from fire, for its lubrication. It should draw about 7-9 amps and that will be plenty to satisfy the needs of the engine. I'm sorry to say that it does sound very much as if it has siezed up on you even though it is a new pump. Black and green is the supplpy which continues on to feed the boost pump in the tank to ensure flooded suction. Brown is earth, continuing on to the boost pump in the same manner. It was a good idea to change the noisy pump as eventually it will draw so much current it could melt the connnecting block, as it did in my 1983 924 lux which also had a noisy pump. Mind you it lasted me 11 years.

its a typical obscure make but having just got them to send my second one as the first one i fitted failed i cant vouch for quality its erstklassig the maker trading as but only available thru gsf

i wouldnt be scared by my experience i suspect my problems are down to wiring that has deteriorated due to age as we did test a few things and found it to be part of the problem the actual access if you use ground ramps isnt actually that bad but you should prepare yourself for a bit of a bath in petrol as it comes out at a fair quantity between the pumps when the hose is off but recce the job your self and if you reckon you can do it go for it

wiring was the problem i renewed the feeds from the in tank pump replaced the failed pump and we had sucess and we were dancing with big smiles and happiness and a beer in hand

just a final post,i stated i had a faulty pump sent from gsf they said initally i wasnt going to get a refund until i had sent it back to them and they inturn had sent it back to the manufacturers for checking a period of 3-4 weeks but if you push it you can get an instant credit if you mention trading standards and sending goods not fit for purpose
