fuel pump servicing advice

My S2 hasn't started now since November 08 and I really miss her on the weekends. The problem is with the fuel delivery so I thought I'd start with the pump
I hope to clean the contacts on the pump this weekend . Has anyone done this before can give me some advice ?
 
Have you checked that you are not actually getting fuel to the engine ? in other words the pump is OK,crack the end of the fuel rail open after cranking to see if fuel under pressure is coming out.
Is the battery fully charged and cranking over fast enough as the ECU looks at the engine turning over at a pre set speed (30 odd RPM) before switching the DME relay in, the speed is picked up on a flywheel crank sensor bolted to the bellhousing.
Has the DME relay given up as this is a common failiure, lots of people carry a spare one, me included.
