Fuel pump

1979 911 SC 3.0 - Looking for some help and advice… while in Italy last year I had a fuel pump “issue” (embarrassingly right outside the Ferrari factory in Modena). The car would not start… I eventually resolved the issue by applying 12 volts directly to the fuel pump, which spurred it into action. I had a similar problem the following morning, this time resolved by a quick ”tap” with a hammer. After that I had no further issues on the journey back through France (did the 100 octane fuel help..?). Anyway, my question(s) - I have another trip to Italy planned for May this year, and would like to carry a spare fuel pump “just in case” - I understand that 1978 and ‘79 cars have a unique fuel pump with an internal check valve and 10mm connection, and many sources tell me that this item is no longer available... Other reliable sources tell me that the Bosch part (580-254-984) is a direct replacement, even though it does not match up with the Porsche part number…. Yet other reliable sources say it won’t do the job…. Does anyone here have the definitive answer…? I don’t want to spend a lot of money on a part which when I actually need to use it won’t work for me.

This is the version we sell and have done for a few years, sold quite a few so they do work!

I see that Design 911 sell 2 levels of pumps - one for up to 1979, and another for 1980 onwards. They also sell various makes of each -- see this link; https://www.design911.co.uk/diagrams/d/39172/0. I normally find Design 911 to be helpful and knowledgeable when I phone them -- probably worth giving them a call to see what they know / recommend. I also found this link which contains some useful information; https://forums.pelicanparts.com/por...8-79-911sc-fuel-pump-nla-what-my-options.html. I hope this helps, please let us know how you get on.
