Fuel tank

Please help !! is there an easy way of removing the metal fuel tank from my 84, 944? its leaking and failed its mot ... and where can I get a new / second hand one from ....
Any help would be appreciated.


 
No easy way unfortunately Dave: its a bitch of a job. You may be able to patch it, seal it (epoxy tank patch then underseal) and go for an MOT elsewhere. Good metal tanks are rare and fitting a series two plastic tnk isnt straightforward. Id try Paul Higginson at PHSportscars for a sensible price.
 
Ive said test elsewhere because I cant remember whether a patch is acceptable (or whether its only acceptable before test and not as a repair after fail). If its not acceptable then I believe that the next garage cant see the last garages fail sheet on the MOT computer system; so if you dont show them the fail sheet then they shouldnt be any the wiser.

Im surprised that this is so, but it came straight from a testing centre owner, so I have accepted it.
 
Like 944man says, it's a horrible job - I did it on my old 924. I'd just finished doing the clutch, finished bolting the gearbox back in, and spotted a little blemish on the fuel tank. scratched it with a fingernail, and it peed 4-star in my eye. I phoned the local Porsche dealer for a price - and was told £1,200 (This is about 8-9 years ago).
I ended up taking the gearbox back out, removing the tank and handing it over to a firm that specializes in radiators and fuel tanks. (Serck Marston, don't know if there's a branch near you...) They "de-gassed" it, sent it to Dundee from the local branch in Aberdeen, got it brazed up, painted it and sent it back. I think the bill was about £45. I remember it was a sod to get back in. I needed lots of patience, some grease on the tight bits and quite a few swearies. Good luck!

I don't think this is the case anymore. I think that if a car has failed, the failure and the points of failure can be seen by anyone else who has the car presented to them, via the new computerised system.

(I'm not sure if every MOT place is now computerised. I know there was regional roll-out at first but I'd be surprised if it isn't countrywide by now.)

This was looking at a fail sheet two months ago Oli, so I believe that it is so. He could not see the fail on the system. It obviously wasnt the case before the system was computerised.

Interesting, I stand corrected (said the man in orthopaedic shoes!)

I wonder why that is so? I'd have thought that being able to see the points of fail for a car that has recently failed to make the grade would be useful, in order to know what to pay particular attention to. Clearly the information is captured and stored - as there was reams of it as statistics on the 'MOT' thread that Peter Empson started a week or so ago.
