Fuel Tanks (again!)

Can anyone tell me whether a 944 tank can be fitted into a 924? (a friend is doing a bit of work on one and needs the benefit of someone who has been to this place)

If not, who might have the knowledge? any help would be gratefully appreciated
 
A 924S is to all intents and purposes a series one 944, the fuel tanks are interchangeable. Fitting a series two 944 plastic tank is a far larger undertaking, although it is perfectly possible.

Yep, definitely possible. And a 924S with an 88 Litre tank has a cruising range of around 600 Miles. Ask me how I know ;-)
 
There's a coincidence - I actually fitted Sean's tank...

The only real obstacle is the removal of the welded crossmember, Sean's is quite a late car & had the captive nuts for the 944 gearbox support under the welded part. Ans the mounts that fit in the centre of the tank. An earlier car may or may not have these mounts fitted, you'll only know when you get in there. Another problem could be the fuel line routing as they run along the other side of the floor on a 944.
 
From what Ive read earlier cars have these captives fitted too, which is strange. Does Seans car have a standard series two gearbox mount, or have you welded it up?

It is strange, I guess the boot floor metalwork is shared with 924 & 944. His car uses the standard 944 mount & bolted crossmember.

Swapping the fuel lines was fortuitous, as after 20 years they looked decidedly second hand, and I think I had one of the last sets of 944 OEM tubing for certain parts..

The rear of the 924S is all 944T now: the tank (nb a 968 one doesn't fit to a 944 gearbox easily), G/Box with LSD and cooler, the infamous brakes with guaranteed plate-lift & driveshafts..

This is probaby only ever going to be a theoretical question, because Im struggling to find a turnkey 944T at sensible money, so the chance of fitting a 968 driveline is pretty slim..... [:D]

AFAIK correct: If I wanted a heavier gearbox with a famously fussy pinion bearing assy, together with an extra gear that would allow my 924S to fly (literally, due to the aerodynamics north of 140 Mph), yes. Of course I'd hope someone does the decent thing and shoots me first..
 
Hi My godson and I share a 924S and I can assure you the plastic fuel tank from a 944 does not fit unless you cut out a cross member etc Anyone want to buy our plastic fuel tank we bought in error. So what have we done - had the std tank renovated for £200 and will be putting back as was. Our car is a 1986 model maybe the very last 0f the 924S is different but I doubt it. If we were making a racer who cares what gets cut out but we like to keep the car reasonably std Ken Coad
