Discussion on effects of 95/98 Octane (mainly relating to N/A 993's) is >HERE<

When I go mine without a handbook in English I was advised that I could get away with 95 ron if I wasnt going to be racing it all the time. I tried a full tank or two of Optimax(£90!! , long range tank)and didnt notice any difference.
After a few thousand clicks and being more aware of the sound and feel of the car, I noticed when my foot was flat on the floor I could feel a slight bit of hesitation in the top end of the rev range so I tried out the Optimax again and found that this went away(so I presume it was the knock sensor etc) I also found that I was also getting nearly 2 mpg extra!

So definately the good stuff as it works out cheaper when considering mpg and performance. Only thing to be aware of is that some of the testing on super unleaded has noticed that it starts todegrade after a few weeks sat in the pumps so use a high volume station, which happily coincides with normally the cheapest.

Good luck and enjoy the car.

The problem is if you buy 95 RON all the time you probably end up with something less than 95 RON in your tank as the fuel you put varys in its quality and actual RON rating because by the time the fuel reaches the pumps it's been diluted with dodgy batches of lower RON fuel. I put 97/98RON in my 944 turbo even though my ECU can't see the extra 2/3 RON purely to ensure that I have at least 95 RON in the tank by the time it's diluted. The result is that my car doesn't suffer knock resulting in the ECU violently retarding ignition timing on cold days under boost like it did when I ran it on 95 RON. I've not noticed any improvement in fuel consumption but i've found an extra 2.5hp on the rolling road!! It is especially important for turbocharged cars to have a decent level of RON in your tank to prevent the dreaded knock although I doubt the ECU's fitted to any Porsche (maybe with the exception of the very latest models) can use the extra RON's above 98 - for that you will have to get your car mapped especially to use that fuel but that would tie you down to only using that octane.
