hi should i be useing super unleaded or just priemum grade fuel in my 964 book says 95 ron dont know what priemum unleaded is regards ray [:)]

Ray,

If your car is using the standard DME firmware then standard unleaded (95 RON) is fine. If you have had the car "chipped", i.e. a more aggressive fuel mapping firmware, as either a standard plug-in or as a real time dyno-based re-map there's a chance that the new fuel map might be optimised for use with RON98 or better.

Most people with "chipped" cars tend to use either Shell's V-Power, BP's Ultimate or Tesco's 99 - these are all RON99. There is no point in bothering with BP's Ultimate 102 (RON102) unless you have wallet overflow!!

cheers dave every thing is standard on the engine except for the decat pipe so ile just stick to the priemum grade then thanks again ray [:)]

Ive always ran the 964 on Optimax, as I was used to doing this on the last car (it was mapped to run on it). Its probably in my head, but she seems to run better!

I have always run ordinary 95 in my car.

My local Shell station had a 'happy hour' recently where they were offering 'the good stuff' (Optimax) for the same price as the ordinary stuff, so I tried a full tank of the Diesel version of it in the Mundano which was running on fumes at the time. I found no decernable difference at all.

I would say that unless your engine is optimised for 98, stick with the 95 & save yourself a few pennies.

No doubt Dave has a technical viewpoint on this...

I don't know about a "technical" viewpoint, but I think the benefits vary from car to car. As far as the V-Power diesel is concerned I can't imagine any benefit whatsoever - unless you plan on using it long term. The diesel engine is very forgiving about fuel quality and I suspect any advantage of V-Power diesel might be related to additives (like the petrol) which might lead to a cleaner engine in the long term. One tankful, though, isn't going to make any difference at all.

The petrol V-Power has a bit of a reputation for giving slightly better consumption figures, largely out weighing the cost, and it would be interesting to see if the diesel variety gives a similar benefit.

Unless a petrol engine is tuned to take advantage of better fuel you can only hope that a slight improvement in efficiency may help consumption but where the engine is tuned for 98RON or better the lower grade will only serve to reduce performance (if you have knock sensors) or downright do damage (if you haven't). The standard 964 DOES have a knock sensor but I have heard of modified cars running Motec that didn't and was ruined by poor fuel.

The standard engine is designed to run with 95RON and, apart from any cleaning and/or efficiency benefit, will not see any major improvement from running with anything better.

Dave
