hi, have just taken delivery of a 2yr old 997s. shud i run it on premium unleaded only or is the normal unleaded ok?? tks
 
I believe the handbook recommends 98 RON but 95 can be used. I try and use Shell V Power whenever possible.
 
also allan do you think i will notice a big power difference using different fuel and is there a big difference in price or is it more about whats best for the engine??? tks

Sorry I can't answer the question re performance as I've never carried out a controlled experiment but I'm a firm believer in doing what the manufacturer recommends, at least while under warranty, then if anything does go wrong I can with hand on heart say I didn't do it [;)]. However, I suspect difference in performance, although present, might be hard to detect during normal use and I also doubt that any improvements in MPG will justify the price premium [&:]. The only hard data I can give you is that over 5,800 miles I've averaged 24.24 MPG and 81% of these miles have been driven on Shell V Power.

Drifting off topic here you may want to post this on either the 997 or concours forum as you will get a wider range of views. However, I use Zaino which is not very popular in the UK but is generally considered the best by professional detailers in the USA. It's not cheap and is very labour intensive but I have plenty of time being retired and I'm pleased with the results. I would imagine that it'll be fine with the 97 and when passing fill on V-power - I hope so as thats what I do [:eek:]

My nearest Shell station is about a simialr distance, so I time fill ups with me going that direction, by eck! I'm passing by it tomorrow [:D]
I find the cars use a lot of fuel, especially when you've just had them [;)] [8D]

Nothing but V Power for my baby.[;)] And my nearest is 20 miles away too. Could always get a couple of 10 litre metal cans and keep some for emergencies (I do) - should be good for 100 miles! I have heard it "goes off" if stored for too long though.......
 
In my experience 97 or 98 octane makes not a scrap of difference.

Shell pulled out of our area years ago - our nearest station is now 40 miles away.

I tend to use BP Stations where possible hereabouts and stick to higher volume sites with busy throughput as I've found quality at smaller sites can sometimes be erratic.

The engine comes with a brilliant software package and includes knock sensors that guard against damage from poor fuels. In extremes, it retards ignition and prevents detonation. You then notice some reduced engine performance, but it readjusts to optimise better fuel later. [:)]

There's loads on the interweb regarding Shell v BP.

I would certainly use Shell when available and at a sensible cost, but wouldn't drive miles out of my way or pay a large premium to get it.

The OP asked if 97 is OK in the absence of 98. It'll be fine - in the real world, I can't discern any difference. The car will also run OK on 95 octane if necessary. Getting a tankful of clean burning fuel is the main priority IMHO.

how are you guys feeling about Tesco 99?

I used to love it in my old Turbo cars, but find the 997 even though its NA prefers Shell by a mile
 
don't have an awful lot of choice around here other than to use Tescos. used it in all my Porsches and have never had any trouble whats so ever. i will however top up with shell when ever i happen to be passing one but theres no way i'm driving miles out of my way just for petrol.

It would seem that higher octane fuel is desirable, particularly in turbocharged engines, as it provides for a much more controllable burn. But,with the all singing all dancing computers these days, they will run on most things short of chip fat I imagine!
