Todays Autocar June 29th carries a full double page spread of the next MY05 Boxster and Boxster Coupe [8D]

Where do I begin [;)]

Styling is distinctly Boxster, although most body panels are new. The headlamps become more rounded and larger front air vents feed the front mounted rads, while bigger vents ahead of the rear wheelarch ram air into the mid-mounted engine. Most of the componentry shared with the 997 will be out of sight, including a four way adjustable steering column, a repositioned pedal box for more interior space and many of the component sets used in the chasis and suspension.

Two carry over six cylinder engines will power the new Boxster and "S", although both units will be upgraded. Capacities ar expected to remain 2.7 and 3.2 litres, although new VarioCam Plus valvegear will push power outputs up to around 240 and 270bhp.
Expect the standard Boxster to top 160mph with 0-60mph in around 6.0, while the more powerful "S" will nudge 170mph and reach 60mph in 5.5sec.

A new DSG twin clutch gearbox will be available but not at the launch!!

Sitting inside the snug 2 seater cabin drivers will notice a 911-sourced centre console, although the eye level dashboard will be unique. A multi function screen, larger glovebox and modern switchgear will be welcome additions, all absent on the ageing 1996 original. Prices are likely to rise to around £32000 and £39000.

The new Boxster may prove to conservative with all the new competition warned one industry watcher!!

The new tin top coupe will carry a seperate name from the Boxster, not a number. It will follow 9 months after the roadster. The new coupe is expected to be the cheapest Boxster starting at around £29000.00

Not sure about these pictures Mark

Why have orange indicators on the headlamps and indicators in the PSU?? The other shots from Daro don't have them.

Are we being photo-shopped again??[;)]

If they're both right - somethings wrong[&:]

The orange is just masking tape to fool people into thinking that they are looking at a curent MY. The Autocar picture of the the red car is a CGI but is looks like a reasonable guess considering how Porsche disguised the 997 (orange tape and PU mounted indicator/fogs).

The outside is fine but my concern is that they've really sold out on the interior - giving us a generic VWAudiSeatSkodaFordVauxhall look with boring old vents and switchgear. Sitting in a S2000, a Z4, SLK or a TT is a pretty special experience (just sitting mind). There is a real danger that the Boxster will loose all individuality in this revision.

Thanks for the info on the 987 - I have a deposit on one.

Is today's Autocar worth buying for this article, or have you summarised all the relevant info in your post?

Sorry Larry - wasn't clear.
As Dapster says - the Autocar piccies have been photoshopped. (Big clue - no panel join between the front PU and the wing!)

I placed my deposit with Evans Halshaw Sutton Coldfield a couple of months ago. They originally asked for £2K but as I bought my last Boxster from them they accepted £1K, but warned that they would want another £1K when the 987 was officially announced. They claimed to have over forty names on their 'list', but as they declined to admit that a new Boxster was imminent I was not surprised that they would not give any indication of build date. It's probably just a good way to improve their cash flow. Maybe we should all place another order with any dealer who doesn't want a deposit!

The key issue is how the flood of orders which will inevitably follow the official announcement will be sequenced by Porsche GB. Will a later order from another dealer with a shorter list take precedence? Will potential customers be victims of horsetrading between dealers? Will those willing to pay a premium move up the list? Indeed, will your name on an unofficial list carry any weight at all with Porsche GB? The paying customer is usually the last to know the rules. I know one thing - this time I will not wait nine months!

I guess that each OPC will be given an initial allocation of Boxsters and Boxster Ss. The OPC will then have to prioritise those who have placed a deposit against those who have indicated intent or interest.

This is where long term loyal customers can (and quite rightly) have an advantage.

OPCs have already been given their provisional 997/997S allocations for 2005.

When my OPC first rang with some concrete info, which I have posted elsewhere on here, he offered me a Jan 05 delivery date which I declined and settled for March 05 ... All he said to me at the time was sign an order form of intent and as PCGB are not requesting any deposits currently neither would he.

So even though I have no money down on a new Boxster I have no doubts that should I give the go ahead after a November test drive my car will still be here for my March 05 delivery .....

He also assured me if PCGB will request a deposit before a test drive is possible the money would be 100% refundable should I decide not to proceed.

Thanks for all the information from you guys and as a result you have persuaded me to to give the dealer a letter of intent. My first Porsche and very excited although a long wait until June slot.

Great news Heather!
You won't regret it (although I may be a little biased here!)

Now you need to decide on the spec and options (when they become available). Oh what fun you are going to have!
One thing the dealers never seem to mention is picking your new car up from Porsche itself - Factory Collection. I've done this, and believe me I wouldn't have it any other way. A fabulous experience!

Good luck and if you have any questons, please fire away. There's loads of people here who will be happy to answer.

Thanks Mark I certainly like the option to pick the car up from the factory so I will enquire about that. Options ooooohh I had a look at choices on current model and got far to carried away with my list. As you say I will have to see what is available at the time. Looking forward to looking at some of the cars at the Essex meet to get some ideas.

Interesting. A working friend of mine (unaware I have a Porsche) remarked in a filling station, to park up behind the "Front-to-backsta" (i.e Porsche Boxster)

?? [&:]

He went on to explain that if it wasn't for the colour of the lights, you wouldn't know which end you were looking at.

Strange remark from a casual, non Porsche owning person methinks. Does the new one re-enforce or remove this perception ?

At Le Mans last year, I was just getting in to the car at some point when an English couple were passing by, the girl exclaimed in a loud voice "but it looks the same at both ends!"

(Cue Helen with her special pictures of Boxsters that don't know if they are coming or going).

Don't really see the problem myself, and maybe she was confused because it wasn't a hatchback like every other car on the road[8|]

Then there was the French kid in Arnage that excitedly pointed at the car and shouted "Ferrari! Ferrari!"...
