Fumes

[:'(] When driving along with the windows open on my 924S there is a strong smell of exhaust/fuel fumes. If I close the windows, the smell clears almost immediately. Recently I found that the fuel tank expansion breather pipe had become separated in the boot but having joined it back together this has made no difference. Any thoughts on why these fumes are being dragged in? I have had a quick shufti at the exhaust system and I can't see any obvious holes or gaps. I have read that on 944's there is a carbon filled fuel filter that can become blocked and cause a similar problem, is this applicable to the 924S?

I have the same problem on my 2.0, but it only seems to be a problem with over three quarters of a tank of fuel.

And as you say, window/s down - horrible fuel smell but with windows up and blowers on it quickly clears.

But then again I drove all the way home from London to Luton with the windows down and there was no smell - hence I think the fuel level has something to do with it.

Check the tightness of the jubs on the filler neck hose. I had this on one of my 924s and it got rid of the problem for me. You have to remove the steel cover to get at it. The reason the fumes are worse with the windows open is due to the slipstream past the open window causing a slight reduction of air pressure in the cabin, and the high pressure area under the car blows the fumes in. With the winows up and the blowers on air pressure inside is slightly positive with respect to ambient so no fumes can penetrate.

[;)] Cheers chaps. I have tightened up the clips as suggested and this seems to have done the trick ! I also think I may have put a bit too much juice in when I filled up as there were alot of fumes in the garage (before I rejoined the breather pipe). Now I can have a bash at getting the rear wiper going.
