G Pipe or Cup Pipe or borth or TOO LOUD

Hi all

I am thinking about making some slight mods to my 1992 C4 Cab.

I have looked at fitting at G pipe, until I dropped on a Cup Pipe which I understand allows you to remove the large silencer just under the rear bumper.

I do not track my car so I am wondering if replacing both silencers with these pipes will be too loud and if I should replace only one, which one do you suggest I do.

i also intend to change the air filter.

Regards Lee

Both is way too LOUD!! Unbelievable sound with both changed, but you'll upset many, including the boys in blue. G pipe gives slightly more sound than cup, but cup pipe is claimed to add a few bhp, and removes considerable weight from where you don't want it.

I have fitted a G pipe and it is a lot louder it also pops and bangs a little on the overrun. I would agree that with a cup pipe as well it will be far too loud.
My wife thinks its too loud with the G pipe when I drive past the house, but in the car with the windows up it is not a lot louder than standard.

[:D]I cant remember whats on mine, it was fitted by portiacraft in 2002/2003 I think its the cup pipe, and it sounds awesome & does not bother anyone, compared to some of the bikes I have had its pretty quite, but having a 964 cab it justs sounds the dogs danglies[8D][:D]

It always passes the MOT as well[:)]

Go on get it, I am sure you will love it

I had a G pipe fitted a few years back, having found some videos posted on one of the Porsche forums of cars with the three different mods. I've never had any comments on it being too loud, or being anything other than complimentary.

It's a very cheap mod in comparison to fitting one of the trick exhaust systems, that's just as cheap and easy to reverse if you keep safe the silencer that's removed, and which adds a nice deep exhaust note.

Hi guys

Thinking of doing the decat pipe first.

can I get your opinion on this particular model please.

Hi Lee,

bought that decat from the same place, my Indy said he'd fitted them before with no issues.
Can't tell you about sound or fit as my engine is still in bits but quality seems fine for that price.

Andy.

Lee,

I bought one of these for a friends 964 and it was very well made. I bought a decat from Hayward and Scott at double the money and I have to say that the finish wasn't as nice and certainly not worth more. IMHO you can't go wrong at that price.
I have decat and Cup pipe ( Ruf ) fitted to mine and the sound is great. Would love to put G Pipe on but everyone says that it is just too loud. May have to try it out tho' ;)

Kev

I have a decat pipe on mine.

I hope this isn't a silly question, but can I fit a G pipe aswell & what would be the effects on noise/performance.

I would prefer to liberate a few BHP and if I get a better exhaust note at the same time, then all the better.

Just had my decat pipe fitted.
Makes the sound throatier.

Can I ask if anyone else has experienced the same issue I have got.

As you look at the decat pipe from the rear of the car the sensor hole is at around 10 o'clock, where as on the original cat pipe it is around 12 o'clock. Therefore the sensor when screwed in is now quite close to the rear wheel.
I have managed to tierap the cable so that it cannot move anycloser.
Should I be worried about this or is it normal.

I'm interested to hear how you get on as i will probably get one too.

Can it be fit in different orientations? I'm guessing not.

Besides sound, is there any observable difference in power?

Only really drove it about half a mile, but i would say probably no to a noticeable increase.
G-Pipe next

lee

I spoke to my specialist about fitting a G-pipe. I had 3 criteria, of which the last was the most important to me, as follows:

1. Weight saving - yes there is a weight saving by replacing an exhaust box with a pipe.
2. Noise - yes there is an increase in noise [8D]
3. Power - NO, the G-pipe is unlikely to liberate any horses as the exhaust box being removed is essentially straight through & is not really restrictive to gas flow.

On that basis, I rejected the option.

He did say that chipping can help, increasing power to around 270-275bhp compared to the standard 250bhp, that is assuming you are still have full power after 20 years [;)]

The de-cat pipe does liberate some power, which I already have, but if you are after more power you are unlikely to get any with a G-pipe.

Although the weight saving & noise are nice, if there isn't any more power, its not for me.

Also noticed that the decat pipe does not have heat shield mounts like some others do. Is this likely to cause problems in the long term?

No shields fitted to mine either. Decats are much cooler than cats so you should be fine.
