Gear box oil

My car has a G50 gearbox that has covered 120,000 Kms from new. It suffers from the usual gear chatter that this model seems to suffer from. It is due a gear oil change and I was wondering which way to go. Should I go for the Porsche recommended "stuff" or I was maybe thinking of a Red Line Heavy Shockproof offering meant for track/competition use which has a protection of 75w/250 EP but is the equilivant of a 75W/90 mineral oil. I was hoping that this will maybe quieten the box a little. Has anybody any experience of using oils like this with good/bad results??

Swepco 201 is the stuff that most people (particularly the early 911 bunch) swear by. I just had the oil changed in my G50 and it certainly seems to have tightened up some of the 'slop', and also seems to have reduced transmission noise somewhat. Definitely worth doing before considering any more drastic surgery !

I had Swepco 201 fitted and it made the changes a lot easier, and also reduced the 1st to 2nd baulking significantly. Of course, I suspect a synchro is required, but sticking plaster is easier and ££ better right now....

I'd have to agree about "quality" of transmission oil being important. The Swepco 201 is rated pretty highly. I can't get it from my local motor factor so ended up with Lucas oil Stabiliser. When I did the G50 oil change we used 33% Lucas together with standard Shell Helix EP90. I've now done about 250 miles. Changes are much sweeter, components are much quiter on idle too. All in all a more pleasing drive.

Looked at the silencer the other day. Showing signs of age although still solid, just looks like me! Anyone had experience of fitting a stainless steel silencer (the one I fancy is from Design 911 with an 84mm single pipe to keep the appearance standard). The cat looks good by the way, so no plans there. I am NOT looking for more power as I have enough but would value views of the potential increase in noise (db's). Quite fancy a deeper sound but do NOT want a boy racer motor!

Coments welcomed from anyone who may have been down the same road.

And finally, I see that "North Hollywood" in California do LED dash lamp replacements. I've seen other bulbs in TMC for side lights etc but not for the dah' - anyone know where you can buy direct replacements for the 2 watt/12v dash lamps???????

Most decent auto electrical centres should stock them, from what I remember I paid a couple of quid for 8-10 of them.

Whats the cost of Swepco 201, I've had the box rebuilt but have got a slight weep from the rear cover which will have to come off again. Might aswell try Swepco when I re-fill the oil.

Thanks

I changed to Swepco 201 about 12 months ago and found the
gearchange to be extremely slow and stiff when starting from
cold. It did however improve as everything warmed up. After
a few weeks I had had enough and replaced it, it just did not
feel right for box.

For a G50, I think I'd like to use Mobilube 1 SHC 75w/90 fully synthetic. Anyone see any problems?

Just out interest, how many litres of gearbox oil would I need to complete an oil change on a G50 box?

Cheers

Anil

Hi Anil,

Sorry but I am not convinced about fully synthetic gear oil in older boxes.. Pal of mine has had no end of worries over noise. So, sticking with the OE spec oil seems the best bet. But as was discussed last week on the Forum, quite a few of us have been using "oil stabilisers" such as Lucas or Swepco 201. Suggest you look back over this thread for detail.

I've been using Lucas on a 33% basis now for a while with very pleasing results. Porsche always refer to what you and I would call "rattles from internals" as "noise from components". Before the Lucas staliliser, as with many G50's I've heard, there was always some noise in nutral while at idle. Well, I can confirm I no longer have any, even when hot at the end of a run. And the gear change is sweet!

I wouldn't go any more than 33% mind (the box takes 3.2 ltr of oil) and the stabilizer comes in a 1 ltr bottle. It takes about 200 miles or so to become really effective.

Hope that is of help but read earlier threads for more background.

Happy motoring!

Dave

Swepco is by common consent, the best oil for 915 'boxes and can make a tangible difference to shift quality. It's a US product not widely available in the UK, but it is available from club member Alan Drayson at www.canfordclassics.co.uk

Bert is not only a supplier of all that is Porsche, but is also very knowledgable helped with my top end overhaul
