Gear Box Trouble

My friend has a 993 which is experiencing dire gear box trouble at the moment. From cold it is very very difficult to engage a gear, which sometimes involves having to turn off the engine to engage 1st....including at junctions.

Just been out with him, and it is almost impossible to drive for first few miles.

As the car gets warm the problem seems to ease, and after roughly 15 mins, he is able to engage all gears almost normally.

Any ideas for prognosis would be most welcome !

Hi,
Could be the clutch going/gone or the clutch hydraulics (master & slave cylinders), if the clutch does not release or compress enough its difficult to engage gears - does it slip when excelerating once in gear?
Hopefully not a serious gearbox problem[].

I'm sure first thing to try is a change of gear box oil.
Although quite why switching off engine helps get into gear I don't know - that would seem to point at the clutch not fully disengaging.

I have exactly same prob, will be taking to Indie post Snowboard Trip early Jan. I changed the gearbox oil to try and ease it (DIY Job)but no "change" (sorry for the pun). I had a clutch replacement approx 15K ago so I think it points to hydraulics too. Will let you know what happens...but might be towards end of January as Snowboarding in France for 2 weeks will probably bankrupt me !!!!! If you get yours sorted prior to this please post !!! TVM
