gear change slap

Hi to all

New member owner of an 84 944 manual.....with what i believe to be a common problem

kangaroo behaviour if less than delicate gear changes accompanied by a mechanical transmission slap

Now ive heard its the clutch donut......or a transmission coupling

whats the likely cause

when travelling in gear its fine....no clutch slip at all

yes that does sound very much like the rubber doughnut on the clutch plate breaking up. Its a huge rubber cylindryical block bonded to the clutch plate to reduce shock to the transmission system on drive takeup

If you drive at a steady speed in third or forth gear does the car start to kangaroo ? ie surge forward then back then forward constantly?
What happens if you then suddenly de-accelerate ? is there a clunk as if there is some slack in the transmission that gets taken up ie like a cv joint ?

If it is the clutch you are looking at about £550-£750 providing nothing else is found .You can probably nurse it for a while if you pull away gently in first and reverse and get in into a high gear as soon as possible and don't use the gearbox to de-accelerate heavily.I got about 5000 miles out of mine before it gave way without warning but I drove very gently with my toes like I was treading on eggshells.

oh welcome to the forum and 94 ownership by the way. The're great cars arn't they!
