gear knob refurb

The interior of my car is excellent except the gearknob which is a bit manky. The problem is that the leather is Mahogany which is quite unusual. Dave at Southbound has none and does not know where any is. Its only a small piece required. Does any of you kind folks have any ideas where I can get some?

Graham - how bad is it?

Mine was Can Can Red and looked a little weird in a black interior. I used "Gliptone Scuffmaster" leather dye to change it to black and it came up really well. It looks like it has always been black. I've since used it on my steering wheel and seats to really good effect. They do a full range of manufacturers colours. It might solve the problem.

I think 17 years of sweat has taken it's toll. I have tried the usual leather reconditioners which look ok for a while and then back to a grubby look.
If I cannot get it recovered I will replace it with a nice wooden job which will not look out of place. I'll take a photo and post it on the site so you can see what I mean. The leather is not so much worn as stained/ingrained .

Let's have a look. I was sceptical about using this stuff, but I'm now a convert.

I've just restored my red seat piping by applying it with a cotton bud. Took a bit of time and patience, but it's turned out great.

I had mine refurbished by a firm in Dorset somewhere. I'll see if I can dig out the invoice so I can give you their contact details. I'm very pleased with the quality although it cost about £25 on an exchange basis. It was also black...

Hi Graham,

I have also used "Gliptone Scuffmaster" with very good results. I have a linen colour gear knob which was very badly worn until I dyed it. I was going to get it recovered like you, but so far its lasted more than six months [:D]
So Im very pleased with it...

Gliptone Scuff master.. Could it be used to change the colour on my seats permanently to black..??

Db

if so ,, where can I get some and how much is it..?

Hi Bronco

It's is used to dye leathers using the original colour to repair old seats that are part worn or have scuffs ..hence the name.
Scuff Master leather dyes are water based colours which do not require a topcoat sealant - it's built in. Once dry, the colour is permanent and waterproof.

A Scuff Master kit allows for fading or slight variations in original leather by providing small bottles of toner to darken or lighten the main colour. They also provide a Gloss Enhancer to allow for leather that has become shiny, so with a little mixing you can exactly match your leather

So I dont think it will help you if you want to change the colour of the leather to another colour ..if I have read your reply correctly.

..but for more info and prices etc go here http://www.liquidleather.com/scuffs.htm

I hope it helps [;)]
