Gear Lever and Tyre Pressures

Hi all,

Is it normal for the gear lever to be a bit sticky in neutral when the car hasnt been driven for a week i.e. moving the stick left and right in neutral requires a bit of effort so if you push it in either lateral direction it will stick there until you move it back.

Also when I got my car back from a recent service the tyre pressures were 36 psi all round. I thought 36 was only for the rears and 29 for the front?

1. No, not normal... (It frees up though does it?)

2. Book pressures are (as you say) 29F 36R. I've never heard of anyone going as high as 36F, so I think your service guy messed up. Wouldn't like to have to deal with that should an accident happen - the insurance company might use "incorrect tyre pressures" as a get-out-without-paying clause...[:'(]

It doesnt loosen off really. It can be tight one day then ok the next.

The car felt wild with those pressures at the front. Think I will mention it to Glasgow OPC next time I am in.

Bigman,
I had a similar problem with my gear lever after going through a flood last year[:mad:]. If the car was left for a few days the gear lever would stick. I jacked up the back of the car and greased up all the linkages on the gearbox, also I pulled back the covers on the end of the cables and pumped as much oil up as possible. My gear change is know springing back to neutral as before.
Isn't there a tyre pressure chart fixed under your bonnet lid??
 
If the sticky gear also followed after the service then I would take this up with the OPC too. I would rather they grease it than you going through the hassle i.e. if that is what is required, especially since you are taking it back to get the tyre pressure sorted.

It is not really acceptable for the OPC to mess up the tyre pressure, especially when they charge you a couple of quid for each tyre check. The easiest place to look for the tyre pressure chart is the back of the fuel flap.
 
Just lift up the gear stick gaitor, it clips out on the end nearest to you, pull it up a little then slide it backwards, inside (where the gaitor has exposed you will see the lever mechanism, just give it a light squirt with WD40, work the lever a bit, then give the moving parts a good greasing, it will then be fine
