Gear ratios

MY '97 993 C2s are fitted with the G50/20 gearbox, which has taller ratios than the G50/21 gearbox of previous model years. Apparently, according to Paul Frere's book 'Porsche 911 Story', this was done to comply with stricter noise regulations in many countries, but resulted a deterioration of in-gear acceleration times. For example, he quotes that in 5th gear the 80-120kmh acceleration time increased from 7.0 ('96MY) to 8.6 seconds ('97MY) as a result, which is more than 20% slower.[]

Does anyone have any thoughts about whether it would be cost-effective (and I use this term loosely) switching from the G50/20 ratio set back to the G50/21 ratio set, if the gearbox is out of the car for a clutch change anyway ? Are the ratios sets interchangeable ? Are they expensive ?

Hi Maurice. Thanks for your explanation. I think I will shelve that idea for the moment. I liked the concept of a close ratio set like on the RS tho, but don't think I could live with a longer first while crawling through London traffic.

I'm glad you were pleased with my holiday reading; Paul Frere's book is very impressive (some of it a little over my head), although I would have liked more depth on the 964 and 993 especially the the differences between the standard cars and the RS versions.
