Gear selection difficult!

Hi guys - long time no post...

Anyway, I'm looking to replace my 944 for a newer and tidier one (anyone interested in mine?) and have seen loads recently. One that I looked at today is a J plate 1992, 82000 miles, and it seems a decent buy for under 4K.

One or two issues, the first being the gear lever. It selects 3rd to 4th no problem, 1st to 2nd needs a bit of pushing across, and 5th and reverse really needs pulling across. The car has been stood for about a year, wondered if this could be linkage issues due to it standing a while? Or gearbox?? Any thoughts or experience?

Secondly, no remote locking. Wasn't this standard?

Oh, a third thing. The clock doesn't work...

It 'could' just be the linkage is seized above the gearbox, but you won't know for sure until you give it a good blast with penetrating oil and then relube it with grease.

They never had remote locking as standard, but it is very easy to tie in a modern immobiliser to operate the central locking from a key fob

New clocks are a bargain at £130 from the OPC [:eek:][:eek:][:eek:][:eek:] or keep an eye on Ebay and hope to get one for circa £30-£50

it would be well worth a couple of hundred pounds spent now; cheaper than a new gearbox....

if it's an S2, I thought they did have central locking as standard.
 
It's near Scarborough!

My gear lever is sloppy to say the least in a 140K car - but all the gears slip in OK. This one is just so difficult to throw across to the left or right. 3rd to 4th, up and down is fine! It really shouldn't be a gearbox issue after 80K...
 
If the shift is sloppy I would be tempted to change the linkages. It can make a world of difference to a sloppy shifting car.
 
Cheers for that. I'm not that bothered about mine though - just trying to get to the bottom of my possible purchase!

You could check the clutch reservoir. I've had a situation with a slow leak which occasionally gave difficult gear engaging.
Do you mean remote locking or just central locking? If the latter check the fuse - again mine has given up once this year. Not entirely sure why but it was on the forecourt of a garage post work so could have been done by accident.
New fuse and its fine. As has been said they are easy to tie into a modern alarm system to give remote CL.
 
When I first sat in the car I tried the gear-lever and it felt that only 3rd and 4th were there. This was with the engine off, and is made no difference whether I depressed the clutch. Same results with the engine running.

When I drove the car you had to really use effort to engage the LH and RH cogs.

Hope this makes sense...
 
Sorry David, 'remote' locking. It had to be opened with the key in the lock. Come to think of it my S2 has an aftermarket remote locking fob! If I can get the bottom of the stiff gearbox and I buy it I will have to pick the brains of those who know how to wire-up the remote locking device!!
