Gear selection from cold

It's suddenly become difficult to get first or reverse after the car has been standing overnight. Takes a few minutes with the engine running and then the gearchange is a bit stiff until normal temperature is reached.
Having said all this, how slick is the gearchange on a 993 supposed to be? It's never been a problem but on reflection it's nowhere near as good as my VW.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Normally fairly easy to select any gear. When cold (first few hundred yards) I have to be gentle changing from 1st to 2nd or it's a but notchy, otherwise fine.

I think the standard recommendation on anything like this is to change the gearbox oil first as it fixes it most of the time.

It's odd that first and reverse selection has suddenly become more difficult. It's not as if we are experiencing a cold snap (I assume you are in the UK).

Gearchange on my 993 (70k miles) is very good, even when cold. The MGA exhibits the same symptoms you describe but that is 50 years old and British.

I had trouble like this but in any gear - it turned out to be the clutch pedal and a 10-second fix! Try looking at the pedal first.

One of my engine mounts had failed & caused similar problem. New RS mounts cured it. Very easy job to do! [;)]

Thanks everyone - it was the pedal. Gearchange transformed, even 1st to 2nd.
Why do I come up as a non-member?

Sounds interesting...can you tell us what you did/had done to cure it? Was it an adjustment issue, spring problem or otherwise? [8|]

Got it done at Hartech in Bolton and as much as I know is that the pedal etc was dismantled, something needed welding up, put back together and it's now fine. Doesn't seem to have been a spring problem. Looking back to just before it was done, I remember the odd time that it felt as if the clutch wasn't disengaging properly until the pedal was right down to the floor but it's OK now.
