Gear Selection Indicator Lights

I have asked this question before, but will try again.
My 964 has a Tiptronic gearbox. The LCDs' in the instrument cluster do not light up to indicate which gear the box is in unless the head or sidelights are on. This only matters when I am driving out of my dark garage when I can't easily see what position the lever is in.
Can anyone suggest where I might look to find the source of the problem please?
