Gear selection issues

Odd experience coming home this evening.
Couldn't get 1st at all, 2-5 were ok but a bit stiff.
It didn't seem to be the clutch as no slipping and it still bites low and no nasty grinding on engauging.
Stopped the car at home and switched off and the gearstick would snick through all the gears quite happily so restarted and again no problems.
No issues this morning or before.
So is it a linkage thing or a small piece of rubber giving notice it is going to give up sooner or later?

Thanks
David

Check for play in the linkage on the top of the gearbox, Put the rear passenger side on axle stands and remove the wheel (you can see it without doing this but its easer) if you cant see where it is get somone to move the gear stick it will be obvious. There are two plastic bushes in the linkage which over 20 years or so wear out, this will give a sloppy change and could cause the problem. It could be that they are the bushes are "moving about" giving the random problem and the linkage may need replacing. I replaced mine for a short/quick shift one as my old linkage slopped about about 1cm in any direction due to wear. It was not that expensive either, someone pointed me towards a US ebay listing which was about £50 all in I think. Heres the link to the thread!
