Gear selection problem

Hi, I'm having difficulty selecting some gears on my 03 986 'S' (with 40k miles). It seems to occur only when the car is cold or left standing. When up to temperature the gear change eases and feels normal. Its hard selecting 1st gear from neutral, then changing up from 1st to 2nd, and down from 3rd to 2nd. The shift is stiff and notchy and the selection has to be carried out very slowly and carefully. I've had the gear oil changed and rods lubricated/adjusted, but still the problem exists. Is this normal on a cold engine, or should I be concerned! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Jeff.

I had the same problem with my 2003 Boxster S and tried what you have done - it made no noticeable difference. My specialist told me that it is 'normal', but that seems odd. If true, it is disappointing for a car of such pedigree. My 944 S2 had a perfect gear change as does my current 987 S. I hope that you manage to find a fix.

Lots of cars seem to have issues with second gear when cold. Since you are also having issues selecting first then your gear selector cables could be out of adjustment or worn. Have a word with your local indi.

I had the same problem which started a month after I bought my 2004 986 S. At the time it had 20k on the clock. The box would baulk everytime I went into 2nd for the first 4 or 5 minutes - either up or downshifting.

As it was under warranty, it went back to Dick Lovatt in Swindon who were as good as gold about it. After it was stripped down the problem turned out to be a 5hagged 2nd gear synchromesh. After a few weeks of wrangling with Porsche GB, the OPC swapped the entire box for a new one as this was apparently cheaper than re-building the box.

The experience persuaded me to extend my warranty.
