GEAR SELECTION

Until this weekend my gearbox was working fine on my C2, partway through a journey I could not select 2nd gear down or upchanging.
When I got home I stopped the engine, selected 2nd gear without any difficulty, started the engine, went for a drive - gearbox was normal with no selection problems.

Any Ideas???

It's done 90,000 miles Maurice, my "bomb Proof" 993 with full opc history has had over £4k spent on it the last 14 months and this sounds like another £2k. Would appreciate peoples estimates - what should be done/replaced when reconditioning a gearbox, should other works be undertaken at the same time?

Thanks Maurice

And you might as well fit a new clutch unless you know one has recently been done as the gearbox is coming out so there would be virtually no labour charge to change it.

Ian.

Make sure they check flywheel and I had my RMS changed when mine was apart.

Mark, I know how you feel - Had mine 14 months too and spent just over £3k to get it right - her indoors is not impressed as previously I had a series of 944's/944 Turbo and never had to repair any of them over 10 years !!

Thanks for the sympathy John I am feeling aliitle bit cheated I must admit. I have had numerous BM's all taken to around 100,000 miles without so much as a misfire, my current 540i has done 120,000 miles no oil leaks, no gearbox problems, no AC problems, burns zero oil in between 18,000 mile services and still goes like hell! My porsche on the other hand, according to the opc print out has had to have numerous jobs big and small throughout its' life who
ENGINEERS THEIR CARS?

My life long love affair with the 911 since the 1970's turbo is wearing thin!

To let you know that you are not alone Mark, I am also having a bad few months. 24k service followed by Aircon Condenser, Steering Rack and now Aircon evaporator - just 60,000 miles on the clock.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for no more big bills this year.

Shane,
my aircon was kapput this year (on top of 2 rocker cover leaks and RMS, electric switch on drivers seat - huge amount of money therefore declined); the evaporator, condensor and dryer needed replacing -well over £1000 in parts and £700 labour anyway decided to ditch my genuine porsche parts only vow since I deemed them non performance/saftey items and got the lot for £340 inc VAT. Condensor and dryer looked identical to those removed, Evaporator not quite as good, but it works fine now!

Things randomly go wrong all the time, that is the unfortunate nature of a raw sports car of this calibre. It's the waves in which they come which determines the financial pain"¦ but then I find, & only then in seemingly angry & disappointed state, that a drive, foot trottling the pedal to the metal brings a curing warmth back to my aching pocket relieving all frustrations and restores that appreciative glow to my heart which in turns pumps a charge of blood to my head engulfing it with the answer to that ultimate question, "Why"? - Because nothing else on this God given planet produces such a personal & beautiful heart pounding rush, no other car will do. It is an ambiguous love affair without bounds or logical definition. You can't put a price tag on that"¦ ;-)

I think Maurice's diagnosis is probably correct. There are other possibilities. Bought my late 1994 993C2 three years ago. Had 32000 miles recorded with full PSH. After using the car for about 3 months every day had difficulty selecting and changing gear. gear stick needed to be given a vigours pull. Talking to a customer at the time who stated he had exactly same problem on his Ferrari 355. The chap worked as an engineer for Maclaren F1. Said I should check the main shaft where the splines fit into the clutch. He suggested I'd find rust on the shaft which would cause this problem. Steve Bull removed the box with engine in place. Low and behold there was a fair amount of rust on the shaft as suggested. Had it thoroughly cleaned and greased, fitted new clutch and it's been perfect ever since. Probably caused by lack of use.

to add to Shanes's tale

the only thing to ever go wrong with my car is after 100 miles following a full PPI where Tognola said 'everything' was fine (having already bought it a day earlier and from Germany - driven back) the Diff on my gearbox went !!! and then a £1500 bill....[][] and there was the leaking oil filter twice... finally sorted after I didn't go back to Tognola, in his defence it was the canadian bloke do did all the work, so wasn't impressed

2 years and 20k since it's only fuel & insurance...... apart from the odd cheeky upgrade ! so which means it's due to break down !!! the curse of chops, nooooo !!!!
