Gear shift - gearbox end modification

Chaps,

Gear shift mechanisms are discussed on here quite often.

Some time ago, in the midst of such a discussion, someone posted a picture of an aftermarket bit of kit that replaced the gear shift mechanism on the gearbox. From memory, it was made with stainless steel ball joints instead of the (crude) bolts-and-folded-tin design of the original.

I'd really like to see that piccie again, but can't find it! It *may* have been an eBay item which was linked to from the thread (I can't remember whether the picture actually was in the thread or outside of it), which has now expired. (There are a number of threads with eBay links in which are now no longer valid.)

So ... if anyone can remember the picture in question, and can post me a link to it (or the picture itself), then please let me know.

ALSO, can anyone post some pictures of the (original) mechanism on top of the gearbox? In as much detail as possible ... thanks.

(Should anyone be wondering, I am thinking about improving the system that currently is in place on my S2. Snag is that it is pig-difficult to get to, so planning it is proving a bit trickier than it could be.)

Oli - I seem to remember what you're describing but can't find the link/supplier details/photos either.

As for gettiing to the gear shift mechanism on the gearbox - I was told that you have to drop the gearbox to get at it...which is not exactly a pleasant or easy job without a 2-poster lift... :(

ph changed mine on a 924S some years ago -I know they didn't drop the box because the labour charge was pretty small.

Oli, I had one of these inherited from the previous owner of my S2, he bought it but never fitted it. Its the short change rear gear linkage (there is one for the front too) and sits right on top of the gearbox, I had RPM fit mine whilst it was up on the lift, bit tricky to get to, we had to remove the rear exhaust box and loosened the heat shield. Apparently thay can be pretty stuck on so a good squirt of WD40 a day or 2 before may help. We didnt drop the gearbox.

This one was the ball socket version, much better made than the OEM one. Dont think I have a picture of one though, and not sure where it was purchased, doesnt John Mitchell in Bournmouth do one similar?

I had one from the USA a few years back, it wasn't designed properly and eventually tore itself apart leaving me stranded at the side of the road. My advice is simple: don't mess with the one on the gearbox, if it feels loose/spongy fit a new one.

As said above pretty easy to fit linkages, drop the exhaust and get under there, should be able to do the whole job in about 1 hour but you will need 2 ppl as someone needs to hold the stick in the centre of the gate when the linkage is tightened up.

Edd - just pipped me on that...didn't realise RPM did one as well, I'll check with them when I'm over there on Wednesday having some bits fitted [:)]

Mine from John Mitchell.

Can't vouch for it on the car as it isn't yet. Feels well made though.

I have something similar which was fabricated and fitted by the mechanic who used to own my car. It's combined with a cut-down shorter gearstick to provide a very positive gear change. Feels very different to either of the standard 944s I owned before"”much better in my opinion. I've never taken things apart to see exactly what it looks like though, so these pics are all very interesting.

I got one off fleebay from the states and it cost me around £50. delivered, great mod and it was very well made, It was a bit of hassel getting the old one off but the new one went on quickly.... I did have the car on ramp though with air tools to hand.

How much is the JM one including labour & vat?

It was in the region of £130 IIRC. I honestly can't remember exactly and wouldn't really like to speak for him as I bought it over 12 months ago and his prices may have changed. Several other jobs have taken over in the meantime but I'll get it fitted in the end.
