Gear shift reuseable?

I had the short shift fitted last week and love it. I asked the OPC for the removed part in case a future owner wanted to change back. I was told that use-once connectors made the part useless but have now found he put it in my boot. Is it fit for the bucket only?

If it has the bearings/rollers on it yes, but these are normally transfered to the new item or break on removal

If you have a 997 , the short shift kit should be a complete new mechanism , not just the selector lever as it was in the 996. Therefore the unit should be servicable as a spare or allow changing back when you sell. If they have fitted just a new selector , it sounds like they fitted a short shift kit for a 996 rather than a 997/987. Only when the mechanism is taken apart do the plastic bushes require removal warranting them as useless thereafter. The short shift therefore comes complete with new bushings which can be removed for the 996 and utilises the original mechanism / housing.

The original shift part I have is a large black plastic housing about 10 inches long and 5 inches wide with the gear lever an 2 connecting rods intact. 996 or 997?

I had the short shift kit added by Swindon (Dick Lovett) for my 997C2S about 2 years ago. They gave me the original and specifically said that it could be refitted should I wish to or sell the car etc.
