gear stick does not centre in neutral gate!

I have a 1987 924S when I move the the gear stick to the left of the neutral gate - it does not want to return to the centre. When I move it to the right then it does return okay - Is this normal? If not, where should I be looking to fix this - front or rear linkages? What is it that forces the gear stick to return to that central position between 3rd & 4th?

Hi Steve,

Did Nathan's suggestion fix the problem? I have had similar symptoms with my 944 S2 but my garage thinks it is due to a wear on the clutch release mechanism - here is a link to my post in case it is helpful:
