gear stick does not centre in neutral gate!

[FONT=arial"]I have a 1987 924S, more like a 944 mechanically I believe, when I move the the gear stick to the left of the neutral gate - it does not want to return to the centre. When I move it to the right them it does return okay - where should I be looking to fix this - front or rear linkages? [FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=arial"]What is it that forces the gear stick to return to that central position between 3rd & 4th?
