Gearbox/clutch trouble

Returning from Oulton Park last week, not only did I have an annoying problem with sticking brakes but more worryingly found it repeatedly difficult finding 1st (or 2nd) gear whenever setting off from a standstill. No graunching or any other noise just a heavy 'rubbery' sensation when forcing the thing into gear. On the move all gears inc 1st were as normal, even changing down to 1st at, say, 25mph (with a helpful blip of the throttle) seemed as normal. Any thougts?

Mileage is 88000km, gearbox oil replaced in last 5000km but clutch, which is still light and positive has not been changed in my 10year/25 trackday tenure. Am I looking at clutch, synchro's, dog teeth? (flywheel) or a simple linkage adjustment, (or a combination of the above)? For the record I don't do any town driving and hardly ever do aggressive 1st gear starts or other similar antics likely to unduly wear clutch/box. Any idea on likely costs may be useful, please.Irrespective, I'm sure its time to change the clutch.

It sounds like the clutch is not completely disengaging.

Hence on the move the synchros can do their job, stationary they can't.

Ian, if you stop the engine does the rubbery feel go ?

 
Definitely sounds like the clutch, am quite suprised it's lasted that long anyway! Tends to be the weakest link, which given the cost of other transmission parts is a good thing.

This is exactly, especially when hot, my clutch started to go Ian ..... new Clutch I'm afraid .... [&o] Could be wrong though ...... look for the sachs part .
 
Mine did this the first time I gave the car a good work out. Exactly the same symptoms as yours Ian...a pig to get gears, especially 1st, with the engine on but no problems with it off.

Bleeding the clutch slave completely cured it. Only cost was a bit of brake fluid and much swearing because the slave is so awkward to get to [:D]. Here's what the fluid looked like that came out:

Thanks again for the input, all sounds quite promissing accepting that I fully expect to swap the clutch very soon. I expect that once the car is stripped down all will be revealed anyway but what concerns me is that other components may be showing some kind of wear. It has been suggested to me that ring gear and/or synchros may have their teeth? worn/blunted which affects gear selection. I seem to recall other members on this forum changing these in the past and that to neglect such repairs proves costly.

Beleive me I don't want to spend any more than necessary and I am tempted to accept that with my mileage, no excessive wear should be expected. Any further thoughts?

Ian, how many miles have you done ?

The G50 gearbox has a fabulous reputation and all the RS synchros are steel, so they were designed to work for their living.

Driving the car with a faulty clutch will wear the synchros, which a timely replacement will avoid.

When it comes to this, check the slave cylinder, fork, bearings and centre tube ? (I'm hopeless sometimes), but the point is, checking the whole system is not expensive when it comes to Clutch time, and the tactility of a well sorted gear change is fundamental on track.

In fact, I can tell when I'm getting tired when I start making mistakes with gear selection --- often 4th instead of second (thankfully) [:)]

The other way round will work only once.... heard it once from the outside, horrible and expensive.
