it was freeeeeezeeeeeing this morning, as well as the gearbox been tough (cold/thick oil), the clutch didn't seem to clear properly clear (dog teeth grinded).

is this a common thing with the gearbox at the other end, or is it just me?

The gearbox on my red 86 turbo used to feel dog rough on really cold mornings. Couldn't work out whether it was the stiff mechanism causing more crunches. I used to laugh because the car felt as unimpressed as me at the idea of getting up early on a cold morning, then as the car warmed up and pace increased we both woke up until by the time I reached work she was feeling smooth as silk and sat clicking in the car park as I bounced through the front doors warm with adrenaline[:)]

I would say yes.

The gearbox gets no residual heat from the engine like most cars so it can take a while for the gear oil to loosen up on a freezing morning.

Mine's is a bit notchy into 2nd on freezing cold mornings for a while. Fine after a few miles.

No issues when it's not freezing so I would say not an uncommon issue.....

yep mine has been a tad resistant to dropping into gear the last few mornings, you could do a fluid change before the bad weather really sets in ( at least this is what I'm hoping to do)
That way you might ease it a bit, but as its been said 'box is at the other end of the car so does take longer to warm through

Paul, I did a gearbox oil change the other week and haven't got round to cleaning the funnel and binning the bit of hose just yet. If you want to borrow it then it'll be a great excuse for me not having to clean it out ;)

Funny watching an STS guy trying to get it into reverse when pretty cold the other day, usually needs a triple-de-clutch to achieve it....

I quite often have to drive the car forward a few inches to get into reverse gear when cold. (Guess the synchos have gone. )
