Gearbox differences

Hi Guys, could someone please tell me if there are any differences between the 2.5 manual box & the 2.7 manual box I.E will the 2.5 box go on the 2.7 ? I have some strange noises coming from the box area, im planning on changing the box oil in a hope that it cures the noise, but just trying to prepare myself in case I have to look for a new box, cheers as always, Jinxy

Do early 2.5 boxes have different mounts? i.e.one either side rather than a central mount

In the back of my mind I seem to recall something about different mounts as well, but I'm getting old and can't remember the details aside (I think) early boxes had three mountings and late five....But that all may be completely wrong.

Mine did the same thing earlier this year. In the end I decided that getting a box from the same model (mines an 8V 2.5) would be better as the ratios would be the same. I purchased it from Elliot (who is on the forum) and have been very happy with it.

Did your make a screaming sound in 5th on overrun ? & a ticking sound in 4th ? this is what mine is doing, i have a 2.7 so i dont think this is going to be a easy find somehow :-(

Have you looked at Porsche PET and compared part numbers? That is usually my first port of call to see if things can be interchanged. If the part numbers are the same, you can be certain the parts are the same. If the part numbers are different, it might be they can still be interchanged, but there will be a difference.

2nd and 3rd are different ratios - makes no practical difference.

Square dash cars have 2 mounts but later boxes can be made to fit (mounting holes on all boxes accommodate both mounts)

Square dash boxes don't have holes for the speedo pick up (position is in the casting is there but not machined).

So If its an early 2.5 box - avoid but a late one with the speedo pick up on the left side - it'll be fine.

I have a 2.7 box in the garage that I cant get the fill plug out of nor the mounting bolt - so would be cheap!

It didn't make a screaming sound but did whine very loudly on the overrun .

The final strAw for mine was when I heard a noise echoing off the wall in my parking lot. Thought it wS a wheel bearing so took it to tower porsche just around the corner from me. Got the dreaded phone call with john telling me "mate, sorry but, it's not a bearing, your gearbox is knackered". He put it on the ramp in gear and it was making some very nasty grinding noises. Got the replacement and it was a world of difference.
