In preps for gearbox oil change..thought i would remove all the undertrays and check out what lies beneath/above?

How does the linkage work? Does it rotate to engage reverse? and why is there a linkage/lever going foward of the gear lever mechanism?

and finally what does this bit do?

Hi,

The gearbox lever and linkage system is a classic bit of Porsche over-engineering. The main linkage is actually above the forward linkage rod. This forward rod allows for a pivot point underneath the lever. It itself does not move forward for back, just side to side sligtly. To picture it, its like an arm with its elbow anchored on the car with athe hand cupping the bottom of the lever allowing no movement back to front, only side to side. Above this part is the slide part of the linkage, this is the part that goes forward and backward and rotates side to side to engage the various gears, including as you guessed, reverse. So the first picture is, as Maurice states, a rubber damper to isolate the gearbox and drivetrain noises from the lever and cabin. The RS does not have this, is has in stead a universal joint which does away completely with the rubber. a good upgrade but expensive. The standard coupling can be improved with a few washers in the right place. The second picture is the mechanical coupling to the gearbox itself. The third is the oil seal in the gearbox for the linkage input.

The RS lever can be fitted without the expensive linkage rod. It shortens the lever movement by about 25% (also raising the gearknob by an inch inside the car) and is a worthwhile mod. About 70 pounds. Matter of taste, but I'm so glad I did it.

Hope the above helps, took all mine out to clean and check it, so feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

GR.....cheers for advice help....where did you get your RS lever from ? Will try to bleed clutch today ? Looks fiddly though (blind hand ops required) any top tips appreciated....Clutch was renewed Nov 06 and has prob only done around 6-7K since then so hopefully pointds to something outside the gearbox !!!!! he says touching wood !!!!!!!!!

Hi Day, I got my RS lever from an OPC, with the PCGB discount it worked out pretty cheap.

Hi Maurice, mine's a C2, I did move the slider tube in the transmission tunnel. The RS lever is longer than the old one, did you fit the lever yourself? if not, perhaps the installer cut off the top to make it the same height? It's an inch higher in the RS too.

Regards
GR
