Are the gearbox and LSD oils drained/filled independently - i.e. do they share they same oil or are they entirely separate?

Any recommendations for best oil to use in the gearbox/LSD?
Swepco from Berlyn?

Many thanks.

Rich

Castrol SAF XJ 70 - 140 is what you need. You can only buy it by the litre (you'll need 4 but the box will take about 3.75 litres) and it's expensive (about £17.50 a litre). Anything else is, in my opinion, a compromise.

Thanks for the fast response Damen.

Opie Oils have Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140 fully synthetic final drive lubricant at £12.91 per litre - or £61.34 for a pack of 5. Is this the same stuff?

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-736-castrol-saf-xj-75w-140-fully-synthetic-final-drive-lubricant.aspx

They also have a 30% off offer which ends midnight on 18th May (tomorrow) which makes it £57.85 FOR 5X LITRES INCLUDING DELIVERY.

...so if anyone else has any recommendations please be quick... [;)]

Also are the gearbox and LSD separate units or do they share the same drain/fill plugs?

That's the stuff. At that price buy it (I'll be doing the same, I've not seen it that cheap for ages). And as Bernard states "all in the same box"!!!

Damen,
Castrol SAF XJ 70 - 140 great oil but why this particularly? The factory didn't use synthetic transmission oil in the cars, is there a tech bulletin or something that gives the reasons? I know different oils result in different noise levels but I'm not sure that's relevant in an RS! Synthetic oils were said to cause increased wear in pre G50 boxes (which may or may not be relevant!) - Have seen this recommended before and would just like to get the full story!

I've just spoken to Robin, workshop manager at Autofarm and he recommends Castrol SAF XJ 75w-140.

Rich,

I spoke to the guys at Opie Oils and Chris at GCR and they both recommended this - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-850-silkolene-silktran-syn-5-75w-90-fully-synthetic-gear-oil.aspx

I've been running the RS on it for 5 years now and all's fine (so far)...

I've just spoken to Opie Oils...

Castrol SAF is really a dedicated LSD oil whereas the Silkolene is a higher grade LSD Gearbox Oil which is optimised for combination synchromesh + LSD gearboxes. He therefore recommended the Silkolene over the Castrol.

A very knowledgeable guy to talk to who sounds like he knows what he's talking about when it comes to high performance oils.

Thanks for all the help. The 964RS Gruppe deliver once again. [:)]

When I got my RS a few years ago, I did a lot of research in to this. The factory, Porsche GB and JZ Machtech all stated that Castrol SAF XJ 75-140 was the way to go. When I got the RS it needed a gearbox rebuild but there have been no problems since and all the time I've used Castrol. I change the oil twice a year in the RS and Cup, regardless of how much mileage I've done. Maybe over the top but absolute peace of mind. Both cars have great changes as a result.

Thanks for the advice , I've just ordered some Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140 for the '72 vintage 911S +LSD box from Opies oils - good price !
The 964RS has to make do with whatever Ninemeister pour in [8|] - good job I dont drive it hard [:D]

Thanks from me for all the advice too - and to Damen for persevering. [:)]

I called Opie Oils and they were happy to change my order from Silkolene to Castrol SAF - and they wouldn't even accept when I offered to pay the difference in cost. A nice company to deal with.
