Gearbox noise or wheel bearing noise????

Hi all, I am starting to think that my gearbox may be on the way out on my recently purchased S2. Got the car on the ramp today and there seems to be no problems with either wheel bearings. Found the nearside drive shaft bolts to be loose at the inner CV and retightened them. I also noticed that there was a lot of up and down play in the output fllages from the gearbox so maybe the diff bearings are knackered. I also checked the other box I have and there is very little play on that so may be time to change it. Any suggestions??? Never rebuilt one of these boxes before, anyone done one as it would be an interesting project?

How do you no there is no problem with the wheel bearings? Is it by play alone? I'm just asking because my rear wheel bearing was shot but their was no play in it when checking the wheel. When it came off the bearing was in bits.

If you can get the car on a ramp and run the car in gear (be careful) you should be able to hear whether it is the wheel bearing or not.

I would imagine a gearbox rebuild is a specialist job and very expensive compared to getting a s/h box from a breaker. What sort of noise are you getting?

Hi Edd, I was getting a noise that sounded like a wheel bearing, a whirring that increased with road speed. On disconnecting the drive shafts, the wheels spun very freely with no movement. With putting the box in gear and spinning the output flanges from the box, it felt pretty notchy with lots of play. I stripped the box out of it last night anyway and will put my spare one in this week after I have done a bit of cleaning up underneath. Gearbox rebuilds can be done at home quite easily as long as you know what you are doing and have a good manual! Will be giving this one a shot as it is now a very expensive paperweight!

Would love to see a repair guide posted if you get time. Gearboxes are a dark art to me and I'd love to know how to rebuild one.
