help . im baffled , my 944 lux 2.5 had developed an awful grating/whining noise when decelerating ,,,,,, gear change is fine up and down , and its deffo not brakes ... sounds like the whine you get when going backwards in reverse etc but a lot more noisy and it doesnt sound healthy . ,,,, taken the car off road till i source the problem ,, what could it be i have checked the oil levels and drained and checked for metal filings ,and replaced oil and its still annoying ,, is the gearbox dead or is it something much easier to sort out , diffs? ... also will a 924 1985 5 speed gearbox mate up with the 44 torgue tube or are the splines different as i have been told ..

any ideas would be helpfull as im sulking now only just got the car through its mot .. and the few days its been on the road has made me happy , grinning and wow then sad and miserable ...

Have you recently taken the boot carpet out? Mine sounded awfull when I did, so I put it back, many miles later it hasn't got any worse. Is the new gearbox oil the correct grade?

Mine is the same as Tony's - it sounds like a (real) Mini on the overrun. It's a case of "they all do that, sir" as far as I am concerned, although from the description yours may be exceptionally loud. You can get it repaired, but I have never bothered on any of my 944's.

im going to remove the wheel and drive shafts today to check cvs , as someone said it could be dry , the nosie is excessive but it only started yesterday , at first i thought it was the rear exhaust catching the driveshaft , but nope plenty of clearance there , the noise is the same in all gears when slowing , best way to describe it is , imagine the dustgaurd rubbing on the disc , that kind of sound , its deffo not that tho as the brakes are new as are discs and dustgaurds ,,full stripdown and rebuild ,, im hoping its somthing easy to sort the haynes manual is useless and i am going bog eyed staring at the pet cd , looking at all the cogs , i am now on the hunt for a 924s/944 gearbox complete with drive shafts , for a fair price , thanks to john barnett and sweetea for getting back to me regards what will work and what wont , i did know that the dogleg box fits but wasnt sure about the 924 5 speed box ,,,,, shame as i have 3 x 5 speeds and 3 x 4 speed boxes , but yep you guessed it no s or 44 ,,,,sods law aint it ..

thanks all for your help and advice im off ebay hunting ,,, its usually me selling parts , not buying ..

Mine does that too after a while when it has warmed up. It never used to do it though before the new clutch and flywheel install.[8|]

PS. New clutch has settled in nicely now it has taken around 700 miles to bed in, still a little jerky during reverse.

i have only just got my car through the mot , after spending about a year doing every job i could think it might fail on , so to have it on the road for only a few days then have a problem like the noise i had was devistating ,, i did smile the other day when i shot off in second gear round a roundabout and bunny hopped her ,,,, what a pratt i must have looked , ,,, think i have found the problem with noise , i decided to get it in the air with both rear wheels free to turn , the ns drive shaft seems to be the problem where it goes into the gearbox , theres more play on that side when you hold the shaft and wiggle back and forth it seems to be slacker , i cant feel any up or down movement , but traveling at speed it could be the cause ,, i thought if knucke part is worn as they have bearings in them not a problem i will nick one off a 924 gearbox i have ,, ,, cant do that they are different my car has different looking shafts where they go into the back of the hub , and the drive shaft is longer than the 924 ones , my car is the 944 lux with oval dash and completely different rear arms than a 924 and early 944 cars
