Gearbox noise...

Hello!

I have recently purchased a 1986 Carrera 3.2 (G50), excellent condition and about 59K miles. There are a couple of minor things to sort out as usual, and the clutch was changed very recently. The car was serviced in May, and when I bought it a month ago I had it checked out by a Porsche main agent.

However, I have noticed a noise from the gearbox and wondered if anyone had any idea if this was normal, an early sign of wear, or a sign of impending doom!? The noise is:

In neutral
Engine running
Move the gear stick in and out of 2nd and 4th, and
There is a ratchet type noise, both audible and sensed, a clicking, notchy noise, that seems a little odd? It is obvious when coming out of 2nd, less obvious but still there when coming out of 4th.

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks

Hi J,

As a fairly new 911 owner myself , it took me a while to get used to the gearbox, The G50 is by modern comparisons a notch and clonky bit of kit, and only really starts to feel like it should when its hot(warmed up).
I don't think the linkage makes it any easier, but you get used to it and when it works and you get the changes right, its a pleasure, but it takes a while to get used to it.
Does it drive and change ok when moving as opposed to standing still?

Fluid change may help, but new 911 owners (me included) do become a bit paranoid, though I am assured that this does wear off after 10 years experience.!
My biggest problem is that after 6 months, I have nothing to compare my car with on a day to day basis. I have not driven many, and those I have, you soon forget compared to your own baby. Every noise, clonk, click worries you
Comfort zone is therefore

Comfort zone indeed, which is why I am here I guess...

Yes, it works fine when driving and I haven't noticed the noise then. It was actually a friend and long time 911 owner that noticed this noise and not me and thought that it might be something and not nothing; maybe something out of alignment etc. My thinking is that if it is something problematic then maybe the Porsche garage should have spotted it during the inspection and I might have some comeback with them... hence my desire to investigate it sooner rather than later.

hi there,
just thought i would reply to your gearbox problem as i have just been frantically trying to sort a problem with my car .my gearbox is actually a 915 but i wondered if your car is fitted with a short shift? the extra leverage and alignment can be quite critical .i found out my problem was only caused by a couple of bolts coming loose but it still can cause major problems .in my case when shifting down from fith to forth when reverse is positioned by forth . crunch !! crunch!!

FYI - You will not regret a change of oil to Swepco 201. It eases the notchiness that can occur with this box and sorted by previous sluggish 1st to 2nd Synchro

Highly Recommended

Thanks for the replies. Firstly it is not a short shift... secondly, thanks for the recommendation about the oil... also by your comment are you implying that the noise I am getting is probably quite normal?
