Gearbox numbers

Im slightly confused (not really worried just confused) that the turbo has the wrong gearbox fitted. Maybe someone killed it and its been swapped since it was new.

What part numbers should be on the box? in order to tell the difference between a normal 944 and a turbo box?

Id post the part number on the casing but ive locked up outside now.

OK here goes:-

016R5P with oil cooler which was standard unitl '86 and an option through '87
016R5R with oil cooler and LSD was an option from '85
016SUY without oil cooler was standard from '87
016S9U without oil cooler but with LSD was an option from '87

I hope i've interpreted the workshop manual correctly but i've basically lifted it word for word. There will be other numbers after the numbers above which correspond to a date code.

This may be a long shot but your car looks extremely familiar. A guy at work had a 944 turbo that looked exactly like yours with the cup 3 alloys fitted. I realise they are a popular wheel on 944's and there are quite a few black 944's kicking around, but just before he sold his car his diff packed up and he basically fitted a non-turbo gearbox to it as he had to sell it quickly to fund the build of his Escort MK1 rally car. Did you do an HPI check on the car? When he owned the car it had a private reg on. If it is his car, apart from the diff packing up it was a good car and he was sorry to see it go. He's actually moving to the States in April and still has the cars original gearbox and he said he'll give it to me as a spare because he can't be bothered to sell it on. The gearbox itself is fine, it was the only the diff that packed up.

If it is his car then it is the car that got me into 944 turbo's!!!! He is a very good driver as he's been rallying for years with some success and he took me for a spirited drive in that very car and I was absolutely amazed by the sheer speed of the thing. After that I was hooked.

There's a comprehensive table on Clark's Garage which spells out the full range of options - look in TRANS-04 in the Garage Shop Manual section.

I've got the same problem as you - my Turbo S has a non-LSD turbo box fitted. However, fingers crossed, I may have finally found a replacement!! Will let you know...

scott - ive sent you a email

i just ran outside and got the following

top of bellhousing QK 14063
then on the side WW01 016 301 10...(cant read the rest without getting a smaller wire brush as its in a corner)

301 does that mean ive read it wrong then and it should be letters?

The code i'm referring to is stamped on the top rim of the bell housing. The workschop manual i've got only lists the numbers for the turbo and I havn't got a complete listing for all 944 models. The example shown in the manual is 5P15105 which is broken down as such:-

5P: turbo gearbox with oil cooler
15: 15th day
10: 10th month
5: year of manufacture (1985)
The date being the gearbox's date of manufacture.

Your QK14063 code could be:
QK: some gearbox other than a turbo gearbox
14: 14th day
06: 6th month
3: year of manufacture (1983?)
I'm not sure about the WW number stamped on the side of the gearbox as this is not mentioned in my manual - maybe a serial number? It might be worth a call to an OPC. I've found them pretty useful when trying to decipher part numbers and specs.

QK according to clarks garage is a normal 944 box..

seems you know where the original one is [:D]
