Gearbox oil change advice

Going to change the gearbox oil....to see if i can resolve selection issues.......eg I am unable to select any gear until the car warms up...once warm gearbox seems to work fine !! (Drove down from scotland in it yesterday!!)

How do you change the gearbox oil?

Should I do anything else whilst I am in there? Before I have to take it to the Indie !!!

[font=arial,helvetica]As the winter months came the Mobil 1 transmission fluid developed a hard shifting problem in my transmission. This problem only occurs when the car is cold and the outside temperature is around 35-45 degrees. During the warm up period I had a terrible time shifting into 1st gear and felt a big bump when shifting to 2nd gear. But if I double clutch it before shifting to 2nd gear the bump feeling is eliminated. So the conclusion was that the Mobil 1 fluids were too thick and when it was cold it was not flowing off the syncros fast enough for the sycros to do its work. But as the transmission warmed up the hard shifting problem went away. After talking with several Porsche technicians I was told to switch back to good old Dino fluids to see if the situation would improve. So I drained the fluids out and poured in some Valvoline Dino (fossil) 75W90 gear oil and it did help improve the hard shifting issue when the car was cold, but once warmed up it seems to require more effort for me to shift through all the gears just like before I switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I was not satisfied with the result and after talking with someone from "Red line oil" who owns a 993 C4S and had good luck using a mixture of 3 quart 75w90 and 1 quart 75w80 red line synthetic fluids I too tried this combination. It did solve some of the problem, but again it is still not as perfect as before when it is cold. I then recently switched to Swepco 201 gear oil, it is also a 75w90 spec. transmission fluid, but not synthetic. The Swepco 201s was the thickest of them all, and it made the transmission feel very different. Almost like a buffer kind of feeling. I am still having trouble shifting to 1st gear when the transmission is cold, unless I get the car to a complete stop for several seconds I will have trouble put the car in first gear. But if I shift slowly to 2nd gear when it is cold I can give enough time for the syncros to work and eliminate the grinding sound. So this is what I am sticking to for now, will see what happens[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Interesting. My gearbox is definately more bulky on 2nd in the winter mornings. I'm planning to change my gearbox oil at next service so let us know what oil you use (and after you have car back in Scotland for suitable temperature testing!!)
 
According to my invoices my car has had Valvoline Synpower on the last two occasions.

I have not ever had any gearshift issues. So that's probably a good a starting point as any.

Any ideas on which gear oil to use?

Its a minefield out there !!!! did some research and amsoil seems to be "better" than the Valvoline products .... any suggestions most welcome !!!!

 
Best according to the Rennlist boys (who have done extensive research) is Mobil Delvac. I changed by gearbox oil about a year ago, couldn't get it then. I could only find it at a main distributor who had only just received a consignment and hadn't yet opened the container. Was happy to sell it to me but the only had 29 gallon drums! I therefore went for the second best available here - Mobilube SHC fully synthetic. You need about four foot on 1 inch heater hose pipe, about 1 pound a ft from Halfords. Jack up the car, remove the ytansmission cover. Unbolt the filler nut first (this is imprtant as if you can't get the drain plug off you've still got oil in the 'box) then drain the gearbox. Refit the plig when fully drained. Next feed the heater hose into the filler hole, run the hose out through the passenger rear wheel well and with a funnel pushed into the pipe pour in the oil. You need 3.6 litres to fill her up assuming 2 wheel drive. Refit the filler plug and that's it.

One thing to check also though is the ball and sockets on the gear linkage Old grease, worn or disintegrating platic in these makes gear selection harder and notchier.

Used Silktran Syn 5 from Silkolene (Opie oils). Didn't have shifting issues so I have no idea if this will help you. Guards Red mentions an important point - remove the filler plug first as if you can't remove after you have drained the gearbox, you will be stuffed! I found pouring the oil very time consuming and some sort of pump will help you transfer the fluid quicker.

Cheers Guards Red....same oil ordered £45.56 (including 10% PorscheClubGb discount) + packaging though..........just need to wait for it to turn up now......in christmas post !!!!!

I've just changed the rubber "bearing" in the gear change linkage. It cost £140 and doing this has cured gear engagement problems, particularly going into 2nd, 4th & 6th gear. Dead easy job. Took 10 mins. Hope this helps.
