Gearbox oil change . . .

Hi Guys,

I am wondering whether or not it is worth changing the gearbox oil in my 88' 944 as I have a slight whine? I have read some posts regarding an oil called Swepco - is this the recommended oil? The other query it is, is it difficult to do? I do realize that it is just a drain and fill plug but are they easily accessible and if I buy a 3.78 bottle of the stuff how do I actually pump it in? I am wondering if I can buy it in Ltr bottles with a squeezy top? And what type of quantity do I need? Any advice will be well received . . .

Overall this weekend just gone has one a good one for me - refitted N/S front wheel hub with new bearing / stripped and greased and refitted both window regulators / repaired the sun roof mechanism changing the white gears and the modified inner seal / fitted replacement rear window wiper motor fitted new gear stick gator nice . . . removed old crappy Panasonic cassette player rather have an open hole.

Just need a little bit of luck with the sun roof and new seal with regards to leaking!!

PS anyone got a OS window regulator for sale or know where I can pick a cheap operational one up from?

Regards . . .

Siddius, I found changing the gearbox oil very straight forward. I parked the car on an inclined driveway so that when I jacked the rear wheels up I had good access and also the transaxle was horizontal (useful in getting the re-fill level correct). One obvious safety point in doing this is that with both wheels off the ground neither the handbrake or engine will be preventing the car from rolling. Remove the fill plug before the drain plug, the last thing you want to discover is that you have no way of re-filling once you've drained the oil! I think both drain and fill plugs require a 17mm internal hex to loosen and fasten. I used a synthetic 75W90 and it slightly improved the cold-start shifting into 2nd that was previously a bit balky. Probably a 30min job in all.

Good Luck.

When was the oil last changed? It should be done approx every 2-3yrs. It should make some difference, especially if it hasnt been changed in a while. When you have drained the old oil, get a magnet and check there are no metal remnants.

Thanks for the advice, but what about a method of filling? Do I need to buy 1ltr bottles with a squeezy filler?

I've read that you should carry out the change when the gearbox oil is warm. Don't know if this is one of these 'old wives tales'?

Many 944 owners have used Swepco from Bert at Berlyn Services and most seem to have reported an improvement.

I haven't done it myself but all sorts of ingenius devices with squeezy bottles and tubes have been lashed together to do the refilling, but most seem to spill quite a bit. Luckily Berts containers have about 1/3rd extra to do the job, so you won't run out. Plenty of newspaper on the floor is my technical advice [sm=spanner2.gif]

I've got swepco in mine and although it's a little dear it is good.
I noticed a difference in shifting straight away and the gearbox is much quieter. The only thing i find is that it's a little difficult to engage gears if starting from cold but as soon as the box starts to warm - no problems.

CGG500 500cc Oil Suction Gun from machine mart http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040215070 6.99 inc VAT. Swepco is good though can be slightly reluctant when cold in the winter (I believe it is LSD safe - dont think Bert sells two different versions)
If you have the gearbox cooler (external coil thingy) then turn the wheels together to pump oil through as you refill.
