Gearbox oil choices

Good morning all..it's been a while since my last post for which I apologise...hi to new and old Porsche dogs alike...:)

Ok so as the title asks I need to put fresh oil in my 944T gearbox, it's been some time since I last did this and thought it best to ask in case there is some new wonder product out there...well you never know.
For those who had been following my build thread I will try to update it soon, the car is now very close to rejoining your ranks on the highway, I have nearly everything to finish, just awaiting my turbo back from it's rebuild and my Vitesse chip/board back from the US.

happy days ahead and just in time for summer too...:)

Hello, nice to hear back from you... How is the steam loco coming along? [:)]

I would use this oil :
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-900-motul-gear-competition-75w-140-racing-lubricant-for-limited-slip-differential.aspx

I'm using a Royal Purple gearbox oil (75w90 off the top of my head - genuinely can't remember) in my Turbo LSD box and all I can say is it works and nothing has broken.

thanks for the options guys... please keep them coming so I can research them.....good and bad experiences would be good to hear too....

Regarding the steam loco ...one is now in steam.... and the other is advancing nicely although still probably a decade away from completion.

The smaller of the two... finished but never really finished if you get my meaning... this is a semi scale 3 1/2" gauge model of 4470 Great Northern

here's the big one.... still a lot to do although things have moved on a little from this picture... this will be 4472 Flying Scotsman and will be a highly detailed 5" gauge true miniature of the full size locomotive, well one day she will be...:)

ORIGINAL: VITESSE

They look great-I bet you're really chuffed .[&o]

Was that meant to be funny? It sort of hit the funny mid-ground between "accident" and "worth a faint smile", but I wasn't sure where it was intended to land ...

Oli.

I took it as funny Oli...it's a phrase often used on engineering forums that I frequent when chatting about steam locomotives....:)

Hiya Pete, great to hear from you (pcgb 944 forum legend) those loco's look supberb ! good to hear the 944 is nearly there, stick in [;)]

Did this recently and used Millers CRX 75w90 NT - but mine is non-LSD. Seems to work. Change is a bit lighter I think.

Sorry,Oli if you can't gauge when I am trying to be funny ( in this case both 3.5 & 5 inch),but I was riveted by the beautiful detail of both models.

As an engineer,I only wish I could find the time to make similar steam engines & admire Peter's handywork-the nearest I have got is a replica Boulton & Watt 24 ft flywheel ,shaft & plummer block bearing my company made for a cotton mill foyer in Manchester to replace the original that was scrapped some years ago-the mill was being converted into residential apartments.

Cheers,
Colin

PS-Did you notice Nick has now bought a 996-not something you said I hope.[:)

Nice locos! I bet that's a time consuming hobby?..

Back OT I use Castrol Syntrans in my LSD box, it's been in a year and the box and diff seem very happy with it. It can be picked up for just over a tenner a litre.

Back to the Original topic....

I use what used to be called Castrol Taf X 75/90 they now call it - heads out to the garage to double check.....

Now called Castrol syntrans transaxle 75w-90.

I've never had any problems with this over the 10yrs of ownership - I tend to err on the side of caution and change the oil every 2yrs irrespective of mileage. Usually = ~ 7/8 K mileage but change.

Chris

thanks guys for the oil recommendations...I'll take a look at each and see which I can get a good price on...

cheers

Used EP 90 all my life, no issues

Saying that, you might tell me it was used in the Flying Scotsman, its just "gearbox oil" from the old days [:)]

Lovely Trains btw

Keep up the good work

Millers NanoTechnology stuff:

http://www.millersoils.co.uk/nanodrive.asp

ACEA: A3 / B4-08, API: SL, CF
EE Transmission 75w90 - A fully synthetic transmission oil to provide maximum protection and fuel economy. For use in car and light van manual gearboxes and axles where the ultimate performance gear oil is required.
API: GL-4, GL-5, ZF: TE-ML 02, TE-ML 05

Info:http://performanceracingoils.com/faqs-ezp-2.html

What does nanotechnology do for my transmission and differential?
As with the engine, the surfaces of the gears have small surface features which wear away over the operation of the gears. The nano particles will fill the low spots to help reduce the wear of the high spots. Additionally, the nanotechnology in Millers Oils is much more durable than more commonly used high pressure additives from other products on the market. As the gears mesh, the additives in other oils will shear, which produces heat. The nanotechnology in Millers Oils alleviates this shearing, which transmits more power to the driven gear, and helps protect the gears as well.

Plus, my new motor has been run on NanoDrive engine and gearbox oils for years and my mechanics say it has the nicest gear change (and sweetest engine) of any 996 they've ever seen......I shan't be using anything else, especially given the known issues with this model's engines.

HTH,
Russ

Swepco in my noisy gearbox, never got any worse in 4 years. Down side, a little slow in changes until warms up but would recommend.
