gearbox problems / cayenne purchase

I am looking for a cayenne GTS 08 or 58 plate car as a long term purchase, however I am being told by a reputable expert to avoid Cayennes like the plague as they develop terminal gearbox problems. Ok while under warranty but out of warranty is a no no!

Can anyone offer a few words of advice[][]

Digger

Who's this 'reputable expert'? Not heard of this myself, and as have mentioned before have done well over 100k in two of these great cars. No issues with gearbox (assume you mean the tiptronic ) and none have appeared on this forum that I can remember. Would consider extended warranty anyway, just for peace of mind and factor that into your purchase price.

The GTS looks pretty cool as well....

Peter you sure about that as i have read it somewhere and i thought it was on here ?
Wherever it was a figure of £5/6000 was mentioned but on the old S not the GTS.

That'll be the reputable BMW dealer ;)

No, two independant high performance sports car technicians based in seperate independant businesses. Both have stopped buying ex dealer supplied Cayennes because the gearbox problems are so common and £5k is common!

My wife wants as X5 however here in N Wales everyone has one
Range Rover sport is out as its a footballers car
Big Range Rover is a possible as its a little more exclusive and I can save £10K on retail price
My son wants a Cayenne GTS.

I must say it would be unusual around here but big petrol 4x4???????? I'd never sell it !!!! but should I care??

Well to counter that my local Indy say the Cayenne V8 is the most reliable engine Porshce have ever made! I've enever heard of a common g'box problem. Mines done 100K and been no trouble (desparately looking around for wood to touch).

I am thoroughly enjoying a second Cayenne (this time a GTS) and have not had any gear box or other problems come to that. They like to use up tyres but I think that they are great vehicles - I would go with your sons choice!

PS - never seen any other forum postings about gear box/tiptronic problems.

Had a look through the history on this forum and two failures reported in the last six years and a couple of glitches solved by opcs. However, if your indies are not buying because of failures, there may be some substance but there's plenty of other indies selling 2nd hand KN's. As I said, I keep up the extended warranty myself.

one indie mechanic I spoke to said he had no problems with KN gearboxes (it was a respnse to a specific question I had)- didn't like them though as they were a big car and he's really a 911 man, but that was just personal preference.
The sales side of the same indie sells loads of KN's too....

I'd certainly recommend driving a few though.
When purchasing mine, I noticed that they all had different characteristics with the gearbox !
This may however have just been the adaptive electronics modifying the shift patterns to those of the previous driver.
I went with the overall smoothest, from cold to hot, driven slow and hard. No faults so far and the car now has approaching 80K !

Thanks Guys!

Looks like I am the hunt for a Cayenne GTS then! [:D][:D][:D]

As long as tyres last longer than 7000 as they did on my turbo then I am ok with that!

The problem which SOME Cayenne's have suffered with is VERY hard downshift(kickdown)this is caused by the valve chest having an internal fault. If you get this issue, change unit straight away before it will eventually break something inside, can tear the rear propshaft centre mount, can also be caused by non "N" rated tyres(it does make a massive differance to how the electronics/gearbox works). The GTS is a stunning car to drive.

you´re right the slide-valve unit is a well known weakness at Porsche, out if warrantyyou have to pay the bill. In certain cases the torque converter brakes, too.

Beside happy Cayenne owners it appears that there are heavy differences in the quality of the car. Purchase and prolongue warranty during ownership, otherwise the risk is quite high. Trust me, I know what I´m talking about.
