Gearbox problems

I had a 3 hour drive down to Cornwall last weekend in reasonably warm weather (26 degrees +). When I got to the hotel, having stopped only briefly for lunch, I was unable to select reverse gear.

This has happened a couple of times, all of which when the engine has been hot after 150+ mile journeys.

Has anybody else experienced this?

On the plus side, I managed to get an average of 32.5mpg for the return journey
