Hi Martin,
I recommend you send a fax to :-

These guys have been very helpful to me in the past any they will quote for servicing your gearbox etc.
Also have a look at their web site.
For comparison quote sends a fax to "the Porsche shop" 0121 503 0502 for the gearbox rebuild.
These guys have also been very helpful to me in the past.
Let us know how you get on.
Best regard

Bare minimum will be 20 hours (£50-ish x 20hrs = £1000) plus parts.

Likely to be more like 25 hours plus parts, plus the bits that break when you are taking it all apart, and the bits that you can see are worn out when there is that much more space in the engine bay. No point doing a gearbox out job without doing the clutch (£175-ish), then you might find there is an engine oil seal or two leaking, might find an oil line looking weak, you'd better have a figure of something like £1650 to £1900 in your head to include contingencies, if it's much less than that then lucky you!

I had a quote from JZ Machtech for a gearbox re-build for £900 plus vat for the labour plus parts as needed- say £250 to £500 plus vat. You can check it out for yourself on their website which has a neat price calculator for the main service work on each model http://www.jzmachtech.co.uk/html/frames/services_frameset.html.

Agree with John about getting seals/ clutch etc done at the same time.

Had my gearbox rebuilt by BS motorsport. they provided a very detailed quotes before the work even started. The "best case" quote for just synchro rings was £1100 with an alternative quote of over £1500 if things got worse when opened up. All parts and labour where detailed in the quotes which was very reassuring. The rebuild eventually cost just over £1500 and the gearbox is a delight to use now.

I'd certainly budget 1500UKP as there's bound to be stuff that's either worse than planned or "worth doing while the 'box is out".
