gearbox rebuild problems

I dont know if anyone can help but my Boxster S 2001 has just been in for a gearbox rebuild. Well i say just it went in to a local specialist to me in Rushden Northants because the second gear synchro had gone and it was crunching going into gear and jumping out it if you were not firm with the gear change (ontly on second gear). The car went in in April and i`ve just got it back. The gearbox was removed and sent to a gearbox specialist for the rebuild four times its been back in the car and had to come out again as its still jumping out of second if your not firm putting it in. The gearbox co. have now said there is nothing they can do and its not a problem inside the box. My gagage co. have changed the gear selection cables?
Is there anything at the gearstick end that might help with gear selection. For some reason its worse when its cold, once warmed up its not too bad. I thought there might be a nylon bush at the bottom of the gear stick or something?????

If you take the gear lever gater out, it just pops out at the bottom you can see the ball/ socket use a white grese to lubricate if dry it dose cause a stiff or notchey change. see if it makes a diffrence.

Try lubricating the two pull rods / ball sockets on the side of the gearbox (next to exhaust) that control the gear selection.
Mine was very bad going into first and second when cold, its perfect now.[8D]
Also as bernard tester says lubricating the ball/ socket with white grease also helped me.

Chris.

I've heard a lot of the 'S' 6 speed boxes are difficult in second gear, mine will crunch if I'm not careful at very low speeds sometimes, very annoying.
The cables that run from the gearlever to the gearbox are adjustable and there is a tool to line these up correctly, but your specialist will have checked these of course before they charged you a fortune for a gearbox rebuild[].
I have the tool if you really want to check it (PM me). Checking is easy you just lift the leather gaiter but adjustment means removing the centre console to get at the cables, some people say it makes a difference but I'm sceptical.
If the gearbox was crunching before and is still crunching then what have these companies done? Did you price up another gearbox, Porsch-Apart charged my friend £550 for a second hand 5 speed box.

what's special about white grease? is it totally different to normal lubricating grease? is white grease best used for lubricating pull rods/ball sockets as advised by bluebox as wel?? mines just tough to get into 2nd gear especially

I just find it very good for that type of job I use a worth product in a spray can with long a plastic tube on the nosel to reach into the dificult places.

Wurth?

ronnierunfast,

I used engine oil for the Pull/push rods to standup to of the heat of the exhaust system and also because I could use my oil can with its long pipe to get access to the side of the gearbox.

Chris.

All pull/ push rods on my box have been greased and fully lubricated. The cables have been aligned with the correct tool and it still crunches on second gear.
Buggar !
But if you hold the gear lever tight to your leg when putting it in gear its ok, it only crunches when you let it go in naturally. Its worse when changing down !

Any more suggestions?

Well how have you left things with the garage that has meant to have fixed this? Sounds like you need a replacement box?

the garage have not charged me as yet, we are hoping its some fine adjustment on the gear selection cables. But we are going to put a few miles on the car and see what happens....
