Recently heard a bit about failing Gearbox on the 993RS ........ is this becoming more frequent from general use or something inherent in the design and build or should you be really gentle with them and no sudden flicks of the gearstick?

No these boxes are bomb proof , I have participated in many track days since 2000 including 40 min ' race ' in feb at Pomeroy trophy with no maintanence apart from regular oil changes . I would recomend frequent transmision oil changes with engine oil change .
