Gearbox Swap feasibility?

A 924 (not s-type, non-turbo) for sale has a gearbox that needs replacement. The seller suggests it currently has the 5 speed version, from a 924 Turbo for some reason, with dogleg shift pattern and 016/Z transmission, with cluster behind the differential.
Would it be possible to fit instead a 4, or 5 speed box (016/9 transmission), with conventional shift pattern, which are more readily sourced second hand?
Are they a straight swap / more complicated / just impossible !? THANKS

Stephen Robinson will give the exact numbers but around seventy-four 924s were produced using a VERSION of the getrag box, incorporated in the M474 option pack. The 924 dog leg box is fundamentally different from both the 016/9 and the turbo box. The simple differece to the turbo box is that, the primary, or input shaft is only 20mm in dia whereas the turbo dog-leg's is 25mm. Neither of these boxes are interchangeable with the 016/9. The torque tube is shorter for the getrag boxes, and the drive shaft has only three bearings because of its reduced length. The getrag boxes do not have a bell housing, they simply bolt to the end of the modified torque tube. In short the 016/9 will not fit in a million years.

There was an ebay trader from coventry, who used to, and probably still does, trade under the name of franklinhill porche, and he definitely had a getrag box for a standard 924. I know because he sold it to me for my other turbo and when I went to put it in it was obvious that the input shaft was smaller, so I had to cart it back to coventry and swap it for what turned out to be a very good box actually. He may still have it, becuase of the limited number of 924s taking up the M474 option, demand for the 20mm getrag box is proportionately lower too.
