Gearbox whine

Guys,

I think I know the answer to this question, but for my sake - would you say its normal for a 944 gearbox/diff to whine when driving..

When I was on the look for a 944 I test drove a few, some whined more than others, but the ones that did whine had been checked and "they all do that" was the normal response.

??

Cheers guys,

A

Yeah same here. Thought it was normal. I spoke to my Indie re this whine - and they said that they did it out the factory and customers used to complain.. 100K later and still the same with no issues.. Just one of those 944 features.. :)

Mine is about the noisiest I've known. When I bought the car RPM were happy to do a deal on changing it if I was worried, but it's just a feature of the cars. When I arrived at Silverstone last weekend Robin Walker asked me to depress the clutch so he could hear me speak. [:D] A gearbox won't cost any more than a clutch to replace, anyway, as there are plenty of breakers out there. The only way to know whether it's really worse than acceptable is for (I'm guessing it's a question from a buyer here) to encourage them to try a selection of cars and then yours. There will be plenty of 944 owners at Porsche and Polo in a couple of weeks, send him or her there and I'm happy to let them listen to my gearbox whine.
