Gearbox worth NOTHING??!!

Hi there folks, just after some advice about a gearbox for my 53plate carrera 4S auto. Having developed a fault with the gearbox where the dash lights showed it jumping between gears i had the car checked at a local porsche specialist. They reset the ecu codes....few days later it came back. They said the next option was to replace the valve body at £1000 or the gearbox at £4000. They went straight for the box....the same fault applied but turned out to be a 'broken' wire on the box. This was fixed and all is ok now. Now this got me thinking, could the same wire on the old box not be damaged? Secondly i have been told if the old box is dead it is not worth anything, surely someone somewhere could use the parts/casing for a rebuild? Any help would be great, thanks

Having had my box rebuilt earlier ion the year I know how frustrating gearbox related issues can be. The guys who rebuilt my box may be worth talking to. Mike runs a company called Sports and Classic and did a great job on my box for me.

Not quite sure I have the sequence clear.

1) The lights on the dash started flashing (D and 4, I presume).
2) They change the complete gearbox, but this didn't fix the fault.
3) They found a broken wire (presumably externally) and that fixed the problem.

What do they say is wrong with the original box?

That's the way I understood it, in which case, 'Local specialist' in what precisely?
