Gearbox

I'm sure someone will correct me but I think the only issue is the speedo may not be compatible (I think the early car was a mechanical feed and the later was electrical) but please don't listen to me as I stay as far away from oily bits as I can [:)]

Best regards,
Peter.

yes the 86 car will has an electric sensor in the box where as the earlier car has a cable from the N/S front hub, all i really need to know is if the box will physically mount to the car using the original linkages and torque tube etc,as im going to lose the speedo cable when i fit 944 turbo suspension anyway !!!

I'm sure apart from that issue it should bolt up fine, I've got through my fair share of gearboxes[:)] and that was the only issue I was aware of when I had to source a replacement.
Best regards,
Peter.

Early gearboxes feature two mounts while later ones feature only one.

I seem to recall that the early gearbox has a three point mounting and the later gearbox a five point mounting, but I can't remember where this information came from.

Here is a pair of early gearboxes.

This shows the mounting points.

Having referred to PET it looks like the one mounting point on later boxes claim is correct.

It would seem that there is a yoke to pick up the original mounting points with a rubber isolator in the middle from which the gearbox is suspended from.

Is see now,if i was to get the yoke with the box would this line up with the early mount holes as the box is still in the car and i can get anything thats needed.

I recently saw in Germany a 924 with a complete 951 engine and drivetrain, so I would guess it is doable, since 924 and early 944 share the same transmission mounts design.

The yoke (cross-member) is secured with a bolt at each end into the rear chassis rails. I don't think it would fit an earlier car unless it has the fixings in the chassis rails.

I have a spare cross-member if anyone needs one.

Looking at the PET picture and the floor pic above i was thinking does the yoke bolt into where the mounts go on the earlier car ???

Any ideas who i could contact for a definate yes or no if it will fit as the box with speedo sensor is cheap and would solve the fact that im going to loose my speedo cable !!!

See here ; message posted at 9:23 AM should give you a definite answer.
Both pictures show the two side mounts of early gearboxes can be fitted on later style gearboxes, as both gearboxes have the same casing (same part number) so you can definitely fit one on your '83.
However, the speed sensor of the later style gearbox will apparently not work on your '83.

Hope this helps.
