Gearbox

2nd gear on my 85 targa, is starting to play up when you try to select it. The box was rebuilt by Autofarm about 40,000 miles ago. How much will it cost to rebuild again and who is best to do it within 50 miles of Milton Keynes.

Thanks of any help.

Colin,
You say 'play up', exactly what symptoms are you getting ?
If its just syncro's, bank on a min of £500 then say £100 per gear ratio set.
Have you tried using Swepco gear oil, Bert Gear at Berlyn Services sells it, I have heard very good reports when used on a 915 equiped 911's and improves the shift quality quite significantly (and only about £30 - bargain when compaired with the alternative).
Regarding specialists in the Milton Keynes area, try JZ Machtech at Kings Langley.

Hi Colin, it could be the linkage that's the problem, rather than the gearbox. The bushes can be replaced and the linkage adjusted. If you've not done so alreasy, I would have this checked out first.

Colin,
Agree with Malcolm....but also check engine & gearbox mounts. All movement here and in linkages will exasperate any fualt in the box. Suggest if the box re-build was done properly, then mounts, bushes, and linkages could be the problem. Check the mounts by placing a jack under the crankcase (with a block of wood between case and jack). Lift the car - mounts shouldn't move - nil - zip -nien! All linkage bushes are easy to replace.[8D]
Also try slowing down the speed at which you pull the gear lever through.

Colin,

Agree with all that is said above, although you don't say what particular problem you have.

Mine had a rebuilt box in 92, (my car since 99)but I am having trouble again now with 2nd gear, only when going from 3rd to 2nd....

But over last 2 years have improved the situation by 95% with use of a synthetic gear oil made by Mobil.

The rebuilt box back in 92 came to £1100.00... and according to my present mechanic...who has looked at the invoice...non OE synchros were used...hence the problem.

Let us know how you get on!

My G50 had notchy 1st to 2nd, and fitting the Swepco 201 improved cold shifting quite considerably. Well worth a try (as is all the other stuff mentioned)

Hi Graham
Could be 2nd Synchronizer or the Dog teeth on 2nd gear this will need a gearbox out strip down to find the fault, poss cost £1200. First check the clutch free play as to much gives poor gear change, but the 915 box needs care on changing gear, It will never be slik like todays cars.

Charles

As Charles has mentioned already, that could the be the cause. However, it could also be that the bushes underneath your gear lever are worn out, and those of the gear linkage are gone as well.

Replacing those (£ approximately 10 + VAT+ labour), correctly setting up the gear linkage and possibly changing gearbox oil (try swepco 201 gearbox oil- it doesn't "cure" a knackered gearbox but it does make it shift nicer after a good 50 miles, to get from various sources such as Bert Gear from Berlyn Services http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/ @ £65 + VAT+delivery + labour )would be MY first port of call.

Try to find a mechanic who has set up a gear linkage correctly as it can be a rotten job if you have to figure it out from scratch. If you are experienced, it is less than 7 minutes.

Good luck,

Bert

I had similar problems with mine pepe, as Bert says change the nylon bushes first.
One is a cup bush and is located at the bottom of the shifter lever where it connects to the shift rod.
The other one is circular and the shifter rod glides through it.
You could also change the nylon in the shift coupler as well.
Check the tip on the shift rod mine had come loose and needed to be tack welded once I had that sorted changed the bushes and installed a wevo coupler the difference was night and day.
Economical to sort out the linkage first, before you start throwin cash at a gear box rebuild, as the cars are old this will need done any way.

Thanks for that..I will keep you updated when I get this done...at the moment the car is in for part restoration

Thanks for that I will keep you updated when I get the car back from ..part resoration...new wings etc
